Bruemmer's
Double Leads Campbell Past Jacksonville
2-1
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. -- Freshman Alex Bruemmer recorded the first two-goal
game of his career and Campbell defeated Jacksonville 2-1 Saturday
afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer action at the
Eakes Athletic Complex.
Campbell
(3-6-1, 2-2-0 A-Sun) won its third-straight game by building a 2-0
lead, then holding off the Dolphins (5-5, 1-2) despite a man
disadvantage over the final 17:33 of play.
Willy
Guadarrama set up Bruemmer on both goals and the Camels posted
their first three-game win streak since Sept. 10-15, 1997. Campbell
has scored first in each of its last five matches.
Jacksonville
missed a chance after only 10 minutes when Tommy Krizanovic sent a
12-yard shot on net, but the ball was cleared by Campbell freshman
back Jared Swenson.
Bruemmer
hit the nets for the second-straight match in the 19th minute.
Guadarrama controlled the ball near midfield and dribbled deep into
Jacksonville territory before sliding a pass through to Bruemmer,
who beat keeper Greg Williams for his second goal of the
season.
Guadarrama
nearly doubled the margin in the 32nd minute when he broke free and
dribbled past Williams, but JU defender Nick Comerford was able to
clear the ball for a corner kick.
Camel
keeper Brandon Kirksey preserved the lead in the 58th minute when
he dove to his right to save Tyler Stansberry's direct kick from
about 25 yards.
Bruemmer
then provided a 2-0 margin for the Camels in the 65th minute on a
nearly identical sequence as his first strike. Guadarrama again put
the freshman from Kalamazoo, Mich., free in the JU end and Bruemmer
curled the ball around Williams for his third marker of the
year.
Williams
kept the Dolphins down just two in the 68th minute when he
recovered and stretched to make a one-handed save on Steve
Hollinger's first-timer in the box.
Less
than two minutes later the Dolphins drew within one. Brian
Blackburn played a low pass down the left side into the Camel box
that Krizanovic squared across the face of the goal and Kevin
Hole's first touch hit the net for his first goal of the
season.
Jacksonville
then assumed a man advantage when Campbell's Scott Phillips was
shown his second yellow card of the match at the 72:27 mark. Even
with a numbers edge, the Dolphins only were able to get off three
shots -- two on goal -- in the final 17:33, the same total as the
Camels managed in the span.
Stansberry
provided the best two chances to tie the match. His left-footed
shot from outside the box in the 78th minute sailed just wide of
the left post. Kirksey then saved Stansberry's dipping effort from
about 25 yards in the 84th minute -- JU's final shot of the day.
While the Dolphins were able to take three corners in the last four
minutes, none produced a shot.
Guadarrama
nearly put the margin back at two goals in the 83rd minute when he
broke free down the right flank, but his shot from about 22 yards
curled wide of the left post.
For
the game, Jacksonville and Campbell each took 10 shots, and both
teams had seven attempts on target. Williams and Kirksey each
finished with five saves.
The
Camels took a 4-3-3 edge in the all-time series against the
Dolphins and won back-to-back matches vs. JU for the first time
since 1992-93.
Campbell
returns to action Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Florida
Atlantic. [ Box
