Balanced Attack Leads Campbell By William & Mary 75-62
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Anthony Atkinson led four Campbell double figure
scorers with 18 points and the Fighting Camels won their home
opener 75-62 over William & Mary Tuesday night at Carter
Gym.
Campbell
(1-1) jumped to an 11-1 lead and held the Tribe (2-1) to 38 percent
shooting (21-55) on the night.
Diego
Aguiar added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting for the Camels, while
Maurice Latham contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists
and five steals. Comerlee Poole scored 10 and grabbed 12 rebounds
for his second-straight double-figure outing on the boards.
Freshman
Edwin Ofori Attah came off the bench to lead William & Mary
with 17 points, but had just two after intermission. Temple
transfer Hawley Smith added 11. Corey Cofield, who topped the
20-point barrier twice in W&M wins last week over Hartford and
Radford, had just seven points on 2-of-6 shooting.
Campbell
led by as many as 17 points in the opening period when Jake
Wohlfeil's three ended a 13-2 run and put the Camels in front 29-12
with 7:24 left in the half.
The
Tribe cut the gap to six at 36-30 on Ofori Attah's bucket, which
concluded an 11-2 rally with 2:23 to go. However, the Campbell
halftime lead stood at 12 (45-33) when Dominique Klein hit a three
from the key at the buzzer.
Campbell
scored just 12 points in the first 12 minutes of the second half
and the Tribe drew within 56-53 on Adam Trumbower's free throws
with 7:56 to play.
A
Taylor Mokris triple then cut the gap again to three (60-57) with
6:41 left, but Poole hustled for an offensive rebound on the
following possession and Atkinson canned a trey from the left
corner. The Tribe never was able to get closer than six over the
final five minutes.
For
the night, William & Mary hit just 4-of-27 three-pointers
(.148), including just one-of-seven in the final stanza.
Campbell
shot 53 percent (18-34) in the first half, and finished at 47
percent (28-60) for the night. The Camels made 10-of-26 from the
floor (.385) in the final period. CU held a 39-37 lead on the
boards.
CU
had just 12 turnovers on the night and converted 17 Tribe miscues
into 18 points.
The
Fighting Camels return to action Friday in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at
