Balanced Attack Leads Campbell By William & Mary 75-62

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Anthony Atkinson led four Campbell double figure scorers with 18 points and the Fighting Camels won their home opener 75-62 over William & Mary Tuesday night at Carter Gym.

Campbell (1-1) jumped to an 11-1 lead and held the Tribe (2-1) to 38 percent shooting (21-55) on the night.

Diego Aguiar added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting for the Camels, while Maurice Latham contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Comerlee Poole scored 10 and grabbed 12 rebounds for his second-straight double-figure outing on the boards.

Freshman Edwin Ofori Attah came off the bench to lead William & Mary with 17 points, but had just two after intermission. Temple transfer Hawley Smith added 11. Corey Cofield, who topped the 20-point barrier twice in W&M wins last week over Hartford and Radford, had just seven points on 2-of-6 shooting.

Campbell led by as many as 17 points in the opening period when Jake Wohlfeil's three ended a 13-2 run and put the Camels in front 29-12 with 7:24 left in the half.

The Tribe cut the gap to six at 36-30 on Ofori Attah's bucket, which concluded an 11-2 rally with 2:23 to go. However, the Campbell halftime lead stood at 12 (45-33) when Dominique Klein hit a three from the key at the buzzer.

Campbell scored just 12 points in the first 12 minutes of the second half and the Tribe drew within 56-53 on Adam Trumbower's free throws with 7:56 to play.

A Taylor Mokris triple then cut the gap again to three (60-57) with 6:41 left, but Poole hustled for an offensive rebound on the following possession and Atkinson canned a trey from the left corner. The Tribe never was able to get closer than six over the final five minutes.

For the night, William & Mary hit just 4-of-27 three-pointers (.148), including just one-of-seven in the final stanza.

Campbell shot 53 percent (18-34) in the first half, and finished at 47 percent (28-60) for the night. The Camels made 10-of-26 from the floor (.385) in the final period. CU held a 39-37 lead on the boards.

CU had just 12 turnovers on the night and converted 17 Tribe miscues into 18 points.

The Fighting Camels return to action Friday in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at number-17 North Carolina State. [ Box Score ]
