Bell Leads Florida Atlantic Past Campbell 82-59 In A-Sun Men's Basketball


BOCA RATON, FLA. - Mike Bell scored 22 points and Florida Atlantic defeated Campbell 82-59 in Atlantic Sun men's basketball Tuesday night at FAU Gymnasium.
Bell, a native of Raleigh, N.C., and former Enloe High standout, hit 5-of-8 threes for FAU (1-4, 1-1), which opened the second period on a 16-6 run and shot 53 percent from the floor in the final stanza.
Jimmy Bishop added 11 points (all in the first 6:58 of the game), while Robert Williams and Lamar Moore had 10 each. Kahleaf Watson dealt 10 assists for FAU.
Diego Aguiar led Campbell (2-4, 0-1) with 17 points before fouling out with 5:54 remaining. Maurice Latham added 13, while Comerlee Poole scored 9 and grabbed 11 boards for his fourth double-figure rebounding effort over CU's first six games.
FAU shot 48.4 percent (31-64) for the game and hit 11-of-25 triples (.440). Campbell shot just 33.9 percent (19-56) from the floor and made only 18-of-32 free throws (.563). FAU held a 46-39 edge on the boards.
The Owls jumped to a 17-6 lead in the first 6:58 on five 3-pointers, including three from Bishop.
Latham fueled a 12-2 run with nine points over 4:30 and the Camels cut the gap to 24-21 on Aguiar's free throws with 3:55 remaining in the period. FAU, however, closed the half on an 11-1 spurt to lead 35-22 at the break.
Florida Atlantic made 6-of-14 threes in the opening half, including Bishop's 3-of-4 marksmanship. The Camels made just 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes and did not make a triple in seven attempts.
Notes: FAU senior Mike Bell, the pre-season A-Sun Player of the Year, is a former Raleigh Enloe High School standout, who spent his first collegiate year at N.C. State.
FAU junior Quinton Young is the cousin of Campbell junior Comerlee Poole. Both are natives of Chicago, Ill., and faced each other last year in the junior college ranks.
The Camels continue their two-game swing through Florida Thursday at UCF (7:00).
