Evansville Defeats Campbell 83-71
EVANSVILLE, IND. – Matt Webster scored 19 points to lead Evansville to an 83-71 victory over visiting Campbell Saturday night at Roberts Municipal Stadium.
The Purple Aces (4-3) extended a four-point half-time edge to as many as 17 and shot 50 percent from the floor in the second period to end Campbell's three-game win streak.
Webster made 6-of-9 from the floor and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Center Bradley Strickland added 15 points on 5-7 field goals and 5-5 from the line for Evansville, while Kyle Anslinger contributed 14, including a trio of threes. Jason Holsinger had 10 assists.
Eric Smith led Campbell (3-4) with 20 points, hitting 5-9 threes and 5-5 from the stripe. The junior guard from Chicago entered the game leading the nation in 3-pointers made per game (4.5). Ruell Pringle chipped in 16 while tying his career best with seven rebounds. Maurice Latham had 17 points and a game-leading 12 rebounds for his third-straight double-double.
Evansville built a 17-point advantage on the strength of a 21-8 run to open the second half. Seven different Aces scored during the flurry. The Camels were unable to cut the gap to fewer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Art Stalbergs' three gave Evansville a 40-27 lead with 3:56 left in the opening period. However, Campbell outscored the Aces 11-2 over the last 2:17 of the first half and trailed by just four (42-38) at the break.
Smith scored 16 points, hitting 4-of-7 threes in the opening stanza, and Pringle added 12 as the backcourt mates combined for 28 of CU's first 38 points.
Campbell shot just 30 percent (19-63) from the floor on the night. The Camels made 7 threes in the opening period, but hit just 1-of-12 in the second. CU made 25-33 (.758) from the stripe and held a 45-41 edge on the boards.
Evansville shot 48.3 percent (28-58) from the field and outscored the Camels 32-22 in the paint.
