BOILING
SPRINGS, N.C. - Campbell and Gardner-Webb played to a 1-1 draw in
Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer action on Saturday.
The Fighting Camels (7-5-2, 2-1-2 A-Sun) extended their unbeaten
string to four games (3-0-1) behind Josh Elliott's second goal of
the year. Gardner-Webb (4-6-3, 3-1-1) was able to equalize through
Dirk Dittrich on a scramble in the box in the 76th
minute.
Elliott's header off Jairo Zambrana's free kick in the ninth minute
gave the Camels a 1-0 lead. Camel freshman keeper Bryce Kenny, who
was making his second-straight start after Tuesday's 1-0 win over
third-ranked North Carolina, made the margin stand for 61
minutes.
Gardner-Webb took one of its 13 corner kicks on the afternoon and
Dittrich got the final touch on a ball in the box at 75:05 for the
equalizer.
Campbell's best opportunity to go in front again came in the 90th
minute when Vince Petrasso broke free behind the back four, but the
freshman opted to pass rather than shoot and his ball intended for
Willy Guadarrama was intercepted by the GWU defense.
In the second overtime period, Campbell sophomore Richard Jata's
bicycle kick in the box was covered by Tyler Kettering.
The Bulldogs finished with a 20-10 edge in shots, but only eight
were on goal. Seven of Campbell's 10 shots were on target.
Kettering finished with five saves, as did Kenny, whose
goals-against average stands at 0.45 after two contests.
The Fighting Camels return home on Thursday for a 5:00 p.m. A-Sun
kick-off against Belmont. Campbell is 6-0-0 at the Eakes Athletic
Complex this year heading into its final three-match home
stand.
