BOONE, N.C. - D.J. Thompson scored a season-high 28 points and
Appalachian State handed Campbell an 84-71 loss Monday night at the
Holmes Convocation Center. The Mountaineers held the Camels to
just 34.5 percent shooting in the final period and limited CU to a
season low scoring total.
Thompson made 7-of-12 shots, including 4-of-7 threes and 10-of-11
from the line, while adding eight rebounds for Appalachian (3-2).
Demetrius Scott added 12 points and five assists, while Jeremy
Clayton had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Ruell Pringle led four Camels in double figures with 13 points,
while Ledell Eackles had 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and
eight steals. Freshman Jonathan Rodriguez, who entered the game as
the Atlantic Sun Conference leader in scoring (19.3) and rebounding
(10.0), was held to a season-low 11 points. Eric Smith came off
the bench to score 10.
Trailing by one at the break, Appalachian opened the second half on
a 10-1 run that stretched to 25-11 as Thompson had 13 of his
game-high total in the span and the Mountaineers led 60-48 with
9:37 remaining.
Campbell (3-2), which entered the game averaging 92.2 points over
its first four games, made just six of its first 16 shots in the
second half and hit only 12-of-20 from the line in the final
period.
Smith hit a pair of three-point baskets in a 10-0 Camel run that
gave CU a 33-27 edge with 3:58 left in the opening half. Campbell
led 36-35 at the break as the Camels held a 14-0 advantage in
points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Appalachian hit 42.4 percent (25-59) from the floor, 8-of-23 threes
(.348), but made 26-of-33 foul shots on the night (.788). Campbell
made just 41.7 percent (25-60) of its shots for the game, 5-of-27
(.185) from 3-point territory and only 16-of-25 from the stripe
(.640).
The Mountaineers finished with a 44-33 edge on the boards and
converted 14 offensive rebounds into 14 second-chance points.
Campbell is off for final examinations until a Tues., Dec. 12 date
at San Diego State.
Notes: Six former Campbell lettermen, including two members of the
basketball team's 1,000-point club were in attendance Monday
night. Johnny Marshbanks ('69), a Boone resident who is Campbell's
second all-time leading scorer (1,723 points) and a 2006 inductee
into the Campbell Sports Hall of Fame was present. Also watching
were Brad Childress, who tallied 1,105 points from 1986-90, Gary
Elmore ('89), Dennis Hurst ('96), Joey Smith ('00) and former
baseball standout Kenny Milton ('89).
