SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Ross
DeRogatis scored 27 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead
San Diego (7-4) past Campbell (3-4) 81-69 in men's basketball
action Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
DeRogatis's sharp shooting
staked USD to 10-point leads throughout the first half. The
transfer from Oklahoma State came into the game shooting 47 percent
from three-point range and his proficiency showed as he nailed six
first half threes on 10 attempts from behind the arc. He ended the
game shooting 64 percent from the field (9-14) and 58 percent from
three point range (7-12). DeRogatis's seven threes were one off a
tie for his school record.
Eric Smith led all Camel
scorers with 13 while Ruell Pringle chipped in with 12 points. Gyno
Pomare provided a strong inside presence for USD scoring 18 points,
grabbing nine rebounds and blocking three shots. Theo White set his
career high for rebounds with 13.
Campbell forced 22 San Diego turnovers
but shot turned the ball over 26 times, leading to 31 Torero
points. The Camels and the Toreros both put on a shooting display
in the first half as they shot 56 and 60.6 percent from the field
respectively. However, the Camels could not carry that over to the
second half as they shot 29 percent from the field including 16.7
percent from beyond the arc.
Jonathan Rodriguez reached
double digits before the break for the second straight game with
10.
Trailing 50-40 at the break,
Campbell pulled within five at the 12:03 mark but an 11-0 Torero
run spanning just over 3:30 stretched the USD lead to 16. The
Toreros held the Camels without a field goal for just over seven
minutes from 12:03 to the 4:48 mark. The Camels countered with a
quick 8-0 run to pull within 10 with 2:00 remaining. However, that
would be as close as the Camels would get as USD gave up one more
CU field goal the rest of the way.
The loss was the fourth
straight for the Camels, all of which have come on the road.
Campbell will return to the friendly confines of Carter Gymnasium
(where they are 3-0 on the season) Monday to take on Radford for
the second time this season. The Highlanders defeated the Camels
87-70 last month at Radford, Va. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Persons who bring a donation of three canned goods to Monday's game
will be admitted free. Donations will go to the Harnett County Food
Pantry. [Box Score]
