BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Eric
Smith led five Camels in double figures with a season-high 24
points and Campbell defeated Radford 101-88 Monday night in men's
basketball action at Carter Gym.
Jonathan Rodriguez added 17
points - 15 in the second half - plus 15 rebounds and five assists
for the Fighting Camels (4-4), which ended a four-game losing
streak by winning their fourth home game in as many tries this
year.
Ruell Pringle added 14 points
and five assists, Stephon Griffin had a career-best 12 points and
Russ Gibson chipped in 10 for the Camels, who passed the 100-point
mark for the third time at home this year.
Reggie McIntyre led Radford
(5-7) with 24 points and seven rebounds. Chris Oliver had 22, Kenny
Thomas 17 and Martell McDuffy 11 for the Highlanders, who shot 53
percent from the field, but turned the ball over 23
times.
Campbell held a 40-29 edge on the
glass and claimed a 20-8 advantage in second-chance points. The
Camels scored 24 points off Radford's 23 turnovers. In last month's
87-80 Highlander win at Radford, Va., RU claimed a 50-38 rebounding
edge and the Camels made just 3 three-point field goals.
Smith made 6-of-12 threes on
the night as the Camels hit a season-best 12 treys in 32 attempts
(.375). The Camels shot 47.7 percent from the floor (31-65) and
made 27-of-37 (.730) from the stripe.
Radford shot 62.5 percent
(15-24) from the floor in the opening half, but trailed 45-42 at
the break thanks in part to 15 first-half turnovers. Thomas' lay-in
with 16:08 left in the contest tied the score at 53-53 before the
Camels took the lead for good on an 8-0 burst. Rodriguez fed Smith
for a triple to start the flurry, and then ended the spurt with a
trey of his own.
The Camels led 76-65 with
10:15 to go on Reggie Bishop's lay-up, but the Highlanders went on
a 9-1 run and drew within as few as three (77-74) on McIntyre's
bucket with 8:49 left. Campbell then pulled away with a 14-2 spurt
and built a 91-76 edge with 4:36 remaining. CU's largest lead (16)
came when Griffin made the first of two free throws to push the
score to 100-84 with 45 seconds left.
Campbell's three 100-plus
point games mark the first time that CU has scored more than 100
three times in a season since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in
1977-78. The Camels entered the game ranked 13th nationally in
scoring (84.4), but raised their mark to 86.5 following Monday's
effort. In four home games, the Camels are scoring at a 97.5 clip,
compared to a 77.8 average for the visitors.
The Fighting Camels return to
action Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. start at Virginia Tech. [Box Score]
