BLACKSBURG, VA. - Zabian
Dowdell scored 21 points and keyed a run early in the second half
to lead Virginia Tech to a 94-70 win over Campbell Saturday night
at Cassell Coliseum.
Jamon Gordon had 22 points
and Deron Washington 15, for the Hokies, who won their
fifth-straight game. Nigel Munson and A.D. Vassallo added 10 each.
Gordon and Washington each dealt seven assists.
Ruell Pringle led Campbell
(4-5) with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-6 from
3-point range. Ledell Eackles added 15 points, Eric Smith 14 and
Reggie Bishop 10 for the Fighting Camels.
Virginia Tech led by just
four at the break, but opened the second half on a 21-11 run as
Dowdell scored 11 points, including 3-of-3 from long range, in the
spurt. Virginia Tech hit 8 of its first 10 shots and - 19-of-25 (76
percent) - in the final period.
The Hokies shot 57.6 percent
(38-66) on the night and held a 39-20 edge on the boards. The
Hokies out-scored Campbell by a 46-18 margin in the paint and
tallied 20 points off 18 offensive rebounds.
Campbell shot 54.5 percent
(24-44) from the floor and made 15-of-24 threes (.625), one shy of
the school record, but committed 23 turnovers.
The Fighting Camels trailed
by just 71-61 with 10:44 left, but Virginia Tech (9-3) went on a
decisive 19-3 run over the next six minutes and led by as many as
27. CU made just three field goals in the final 10:40 of
play.
Campbell led by as many as
eight (16-8) early on and Pringle's three at the buzzer drew the
Camels within 43-39 at the break. The Fighting Camels made 10-of-14
triples (.714) and shot 59.1 percent (13-of-22) overall in the
opening 20 minutes.
Pringle (4-of-4), Eackles
(3-of-3) and Reggie Bishop (2-of-2) were perfect from long-range in
the opening half. Campbell's leading scorer, Jonathan Rodriguez,
played just five minutes in the opening period and did not score
after collecting two early fouls. Rodriguez, who entered the game
averaging a team-leading 16.8 points, was held to a season-low two
on just 1-of-4 shooting.
Virginia Tech made 19-of-41
(.463) shots in the opening half, but converted 15 offensive
rebounds into 14 second-chance points. Tech had more offensive
boards than the Camels pulled down at both ends (10).
The Fighting Camels are 1-26
all-time vs. current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference and
have lost 11-straight dating to a 72-69 overtime win at N.C. State
on Dec. 4, 1993.
Campbell returns to action Saturday,
Dec. 30 with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off vs. Ohio Valley University at
Carter Gym. Virginia Tech travels to Marshall Saturday for a 4:00
