CREEK, N.C. - Campbell scored three second-half goals en route to a
3-1 men's soccer victory over UNC Asheville Saturday night at the
Eakes Athletic Complex.
Alex Bruemmer, Willy Guadarrama and Richard Jata each scored for
the Fighting Camels (2-0), who surrendered just one score for the
second-straight outing. Campbell improved to 2-0 on the year for
the first time since the 2002 season as eight different Camels
either scored or set up strikes during the game.
UNCA (0-2) avoided the shutout in the 83rd minute when Nicholas
Baud scored off a rebound from his own penalty kick.
The Camels took the lead early in the second half when Vince
Petrasso fed Matt Lightner on the right wing. Lightner played a
through ball to Scott Phillips, whose first time cross was netted
by Bruemmer's half volley just 24 seconds into the final
period.
Asheville had a chance to tie in the
50th minute, but J.W. Gallagher's free kick from just outside the
area sailed wide of the right post. UNCA had 14 shots on the night,
but only three were on target.
The Camels doubled the lead in the 59th minute when left back Ryan
Freeborn split the UNCA defense with a through ball. Guadarrama, a
pre-season All-American, ran on to the ball, and beat Bulldog
keeper Michael Pereira from outside the area.
In the 61st minute, Josh Elliott nearly scored for the Camels when
he struck a shot with the outside of his right foot, but the ball
sliced just wide from the top of the box.
Jata scored for the third time in two games in the 82nd minute.
Michael Hutchison cleared the ball from the Campbell third to Jairo
Zambrana, who controlled, then chipped a pass over the UNCA back
four. Jata then lofted a shot over Pereira for a 3-0 Camel
advantage.
Despite the fact that Camel keeper Aaron Johnson saved Baud's 83rd
minute penalty, the sophomore keeper was unable to snare the
rebound. Johnson ran his personal string of 19-straight matches
without allowing more than two goals between the Camel
pipes.
While the first-half was scoreless, it was not uneventful. Justin
Madrid's fourth-minute shot inside the box beat Pereira, but was
cleared just inside the right post by Baud. Elliott's header sailed
just over the crossbar in the 20th minute. Bruemmer's free header
at the far post on 44 minutes missed just wide left.
The Camels held a 16-14 edge on shots, including an 8-3 margin in
shots on goal. CU took nine corner kicks to UNCA's four. Pereira
finished with four saves in the UNCA nets, while Johnson made two
for the Camels.
Campbell returns to action Tuesday at
seventh-ranked UNC Greensboro in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The game was
rescheduled after last Wednesday's contest was postponed due to
severe weather in Greensboro. UNC Asheville hosts Wofford at 4:00
p.m. on Wednesday.
