MACON, GA. - Shaddean Aaron's
tip-in with 1.8 seconds left lifted Mercer to a 94-93 comeback win
over Campbell Saturday night at the University Center. Mercer
rallied from a 21-point deficit with just over 12 minutes remaining
to end a two-game losing streak, while claiming its 5th-straight
home court victory.
Mercer trailed 75-54 after
Reggie Bishop hit 1-of-2 free throws with 12:02 remaining. However,
the Bears outscored the Camels 38-17 and knotted the score at
92-all on Hrvoje Pervan's 3-pointer from the left wing with 43
seconds to go. Campbell then committed its 13th turnover of the
second half when Jake Wohlfeil was whistled for traveling with 13.8
seconds to go.
On the ensuing possession,
Aaron was unable to inbound the ball and called for a timeout when
the Bears had none remaining. Ledell Eackles hit the second of two
technical free throws for a 93-92 Camel lead, but Aaron's tap off a
Sam Dolan missed proved to be the winning margin.
Pervan led the Bears (7-9,
3-3) with a career-high 26 points, hitting 4-of-4 threes and
scoring 18 in the second period. Freshman James Florence also
scored 26, while Aaron finished with 21, plus 10
rebounds.
Freshman Kyle Vejraska topped
Campbell (7-8, 2-3) with a season-high 25 points, including 5-of-7
threes. Eackles had 14 points, eight assists and four steals.
Wohlfeil and Jonathan Rodriguez scored 13 apiece, while Russ Gibson
had 10.
After trailing by as many as
23 in the first half and 56-35 at the break, Mercer shot 61.3
percent in the second half and converted Campbell's 13 final period
miscues into 22 points. Aaron's tap-in also gave the Bears a 17-4
edge in second-chance points.
Campbell dropped its
second-straight game overall and fell to 1-7 on the road this
year.
Vejraska hit all 3 of his
3-point attempts in the first half as CU made 8-of-13 (.615) from
beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes and led 56-35 at half-time.
Wohlfeil and Pringle both canned 2-of-3 triples in the span. CU had
a 22-6 lead in fast-break points in the first period and converted
15 Bear turnovers into 17 points.
Campbell's 56-point first
half was its greatest output in a half in Atlantic Sun play this
season as eight different Camels made buckets in the opening 20
minutes. The Fighting Camel bench outscored Mercer's reserves 27-2
in the first period. Vejraska (11) and Wohlfeil (10) both hit
double figures before the break. Russ Gibson and Ruell Pringle also
chipped in eight each in the first stanza.
CU jumped to a 38-17 lead,
converting 11 Bear turnovers in the first 12:03 of play into 13
points, and registering 15 fast-break points in the span. CU made
16 of its first 27 shots (.593), and led by as many as 23 in the
opening half.
Campbell continues its
two-game A-Sun road swing Monday in a 7:00 p.m. start at Stetson.
