DeLAND, FLA. - Kris Thomas
and Garfield Blair scored 17 points each and Stetson ended a 4-game
losing streak Monday night with an 82-73 Atlantic Sun victory over
Campbell at the Edmunds Center.
Trailing 32-30 at the break
the Hatters (6-12, 2-5) opened the second period on a 16-7 run as
Campbell made only one field goal in the first 8:57 of the final
half. Blair's 3 from the left corner with 8:16 remaining gave the
Hatters their largest lead at 55-41. Campbell was able to get
within seven on Eric Smith's 3 (55-48) with 6:33 to go, but no
closer.
Thomas went 9-of-10 from the
line in the second half and Blair hit 6-of-7 from the stripe in the
same span. Gabe McMillen added 15 points and J.J. Hirst had 10 for
the Hatters, who shot 54.5 percent (12-22) from the floor in the
final stanza.
Stetson made 18-of-20 free
throws over the last 2:20, and connected on 33-of-41 for the night
(.805). Campbell hit just 24-of-37 from the stripe (.649) and just
7-of-20 threes (.350) while losing its third-straight game and
falling to 1-8 on the road.
Freshman Jonathan Rodriguez
led Campbell (7-9, 2-4) with a season-high 30 points on 9-of-15
from the floor and 12-of-17 free throws, plus 12 rebounds for his
fifth double-double. Eric Smith added 11 points, but did not score
until 7:18 was left in the game. CU's third-leading scorer Ruell
Pringle, who entered the game averaging 11.4 points per game, was
held without a point for the first time this season.
Campbell shot just 39.6
percent from the field and tied its season-high with 26 turnovers,
which the Hatters converted into 29 points.
Stetson jumped to a 27-17
lead with 5:04 left in the opening half, but the Hatters did not
make a field goal thereafter. The Camels closed the period on a
15-3 run over the last 4:49 and led 32-30 at
intermission.
Campbell made just 8-of-24
shots (.333) in the first half, 4-of-10 from 3-point range, and hit
only 12-of-20 (.600) from the line. Russ Gibson and Rodriguez each
had nine points in the opening period. The Hatters shot just 29
percent (9-31) from the floor in the first half, but hit 10-of-12
free throws.
The Fighting Camels return to
action Thursday at home in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against Atlantic Sun
