Curnell scored 20 points and Jesse Kimbrough added 17 to lead
Jacksonville to a 90-71 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball
win over Campbell Thursday night at Veterans Memorial
Arena.
Marcus Allen added 15 points
and 18 rebounds, while Lehmon Colbert had 14, plus 10 boards for JU
(6-8, 2-2), which shot 58 percent from the field in the second
half. Jacksonville finished with a 47-20 edge on the boards and
scored 32 points off 21 Campbell turnovers.
Ledell Eackles topped
Campbell (6-6, 1-1) with a career-high tying 17 points, plus five
assists. Jonathan Rodriguez finished with 16 points, Eric Smith 13
and Kyle Veraska 10 for the Camels, who saw their two-game win
streak come to a close.
JU led 37-30 at the break,
but Campbell cut the gap to 45-43 on Eackles' 3-point play with
15:17 to go. Jacksonville then answered with an 11-0 run. The
Dolphins stretched the lead to as many as 25 while winning their
second-straight outing.
The Dolphins finished the
game shooting 49.3 percent from the field (34-69) and made 17-of-18
from the stripe (.944). JU held a 51-30 edge on points in the paint
and a 22-6 advantage in fast-break points.
Campbell shot 45.5 percent
(25-55) from the field, made 8-of-17 (.471) threes and 13-of-17
from the line (.765). The Fighting Camels entered the game ranked
seventh nationally in scoring, but fell 15 points shy of their
points per game average (86.1). CU dropped to 1-6 on the road this
year, while Jacksonville improved to 6-0 at home.
Curnell scored eight points
in a 15-0 Jacksonville run that gave the Dolphins a 27-16 edge with
6:14 remaining in the first half. Campbell went 0-for-3 from the
field and had six turnovers during a 3:35 scoreless stretch that
allowed the Dolphins to claim an 11-point lead (27-16).
The Dolphins led 37-30 at the
break behind 12 points from Curnell and eight from Allen.
Jacksonville shot just 42 percent from the field in the opening
period, but held an 11-0 edge in fast break points and scored 16
off 11 Campbell first-half turnovers. The Dolphins also
out-rebounded Campbell 25-14 in the first half and held a 29-10
margin on points scored in the paint.
Campbell shot just 37.9 percent from
the field in the opening half, but made 4-of-9 threes in the
span. Campbell returns to action Saturday at
