CONWAY, S.C. Jack
Leasure scored 33 points and Coastal Carolina defeated visiting
Campbell 85-76 in men's basketball action Tuesday night at Kimbel
Arena.
The senior guard hit 9-of-12
from the floor, including 6-of-9 three-pointers, and 9-of-10 from
the stripe to lead four Chanticleers in double figures. Coastal shot 57 percent (28-49) from
the field as the home team won for the eighth-straight time since
1998 in the series between the schools.
Everage Richardson and Steven
Sexton both chipped in 12 points for the Chants (2-0), while Logan
Johnson had 10. Leasure
added a game-high five assists and Joseph Harris had four steals,
plus a team-leading nine rebounds.
Jonathan Rodriguez led
Campbell (1-1) with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting and 12
rebounds. Ruell Pringle
came off the bench to add 15, while Reggie Bishop had 13 for the
Camels, who shot 46 percent from the field, but hit just 8-of-18
from the line (44 percent).
Despite the shooting
percentage disparity, Campbell converted 13 offensive rebounds into
a 20-7 edge in second-chance points. Coastal, however, turned 18 Campbell
turnovers into 30 points.
Campbell forced 20 CCU turnovers, which the Camels converted into
25 points.
Coastal made (19-of-28) more free throws than Campbell attempted
(8-18), and hit 10-of-18 from 3-point territory (.556).
"Jack Leasure is one of the
best shooters in the country and we needed to take him out to have
a chance to win," said Camel head coach Robbie Laing. "Give credit to Coastal. They spread us out on offense early
and got some backdoor cuts."
The Chanticleers led 60-50
before Rodriguez hit a three, then Jose Cami scored on a drive and
was fouled with 8:23 to play. Cami missed the free throw, but Ruell
Pringle rebounded the ball and scored to cut the gap to 60-57 with
8:18 to go.
However, Leasure connected on
threes to start and end a 13-0 Chanticleer run within an 18-2 spurt
that gave Coastal a 78-59 edge with 3:31 remaining.
Coastal led 43-35 at the
break thanks to 54 percent first-half shooting and 14 points from
Leasure, who connected on 5-of-6 shots, including 3-of-4 from
three-point range.
Fifth-year Camel head coach
Robbie Laing was an assistant on Coastal Carolina coach Cliff
Ellis' staff at both Clemson (1993-94) and Auburn
(1994-96).
The Fighting Camels return to
action on Saturday when they host UNC Asheville in a 1:00 p.m.
tip-off.
