Liberty Holds off Men's Basketball 68-61

LYNCHBURG, VA. – Alex McLean scored 22 points and Kyle Ohman came off the bench to add 17 as Liberty defeated Campbell 68-61 Friday at the Vines Center.

The Flames led by 15 with 17:39 to go and by 52-37 with 13:22 remaining. However, LU went seven minutes without a field goal and the Camels cut the gap to 61-59 on Jake Wohlfeil's three with 3:24 to go.

Wohlfeil had a chance to give the Camels the lead, but his 3-pointer missed with 2:40 remaining. Ohman canned a triple on the next possession for Liberty, then Bishop scored on a drive with 1:46 left to cut the gap to 64-61, but the Camels got no closer.

Reggie Bishop led Campbell (4-7) with a season-high 23 points, plus 10 rebounds, which tied his career best. The senior from Gadsden, Ala., hit 8-of-20 shots, including 5-of-210 from 3-point territory. Jonathan Rodriguez, who entered the game leading the Atlantic Sun Conference in scoring (22.1) and rebounding (11.4), finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and a season-low three boards.

McLean made 9-of-13 shots from the floor and had six rebounds for Liberty (6-6), which avenged a 73-70 loss to the Camels on Dec. 15 at Buies Creek, N.C. Ohman made 5-of-8 from long range.

The Flames shot 48.9 percent (23-47) from the field on the night and hit 10-of-23 (.435) triples, plus 12-of-17 from the stripe. Campbell made 40 percent (24-60) of its shots, 7-of-23 threes (.304), but hit only 6-of-14 from the line. The Camels held a 38-31 edge on the glass and a 15-5 advantage in second-chance points.

In its win over Liberty earlier this month, the Camels made 19-of-23 (.826) free throws.

Liberty hit eight of its first 10 attempts from the floor, including 4-of-6 threes and jumped to a 20-8 lead on Anthony Smith's triple from the left wing with 11:27 to play in the opening half. The Camels twice cut the gap to five, but Ohman hit a pair of threes in the last 35 seconds to give the Flames a 37-26 lead at the break.

Campbell missed its first eight attempts from 3-point range before Bishop hit three-straight from long distance. Bishop led the Camels with 13 points and seven rebounds before intermission.

McLean scored 14 first-half points by hitting his first seven shots. Ohman canned 4-of-6 triples for 12 points in the opening period. Liberty shot 55.6 percent (15-27) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including 7-of-16 (.438) from 3-point distance.

Campbell made just 10-of-26 shots in the opening period (.385), 3-of-13 from the arc.

The Camels return home to Carter Gym on Jan. 3 to open Atlantic Sun Conference play against Lipscomb in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
