VA. Alex
McLean scored 22 points and Kyle Ohman came off the bench to add 17
as Liberty defeated Campbell 68-61 Friday at the Vines
Center.
The
Flames led by 15 with 17:39 to go and by 52-37 with 13:22
remaining. However, LU went
seven minutes without a field goal and the Camels cut the gap to
61-59 on Jake Wohlfeil's three with 3:24 to go.
Wohlfeil
had a chance to give the Camels the lead, but his 3-pointer missed
with 2:40 remaining. Ohman
canned a triple on the next possession for Liberty, then Bishop
scored on a drive with 1:46 left to cut the gap to 64-61, but the
Camels got no closer.
Reggie
Bishop led Campbell (4-7) with a season-high 23 points, plus 10
rebounds, which tied his career best. The senior from Gadsden, Ala., hit
8-of-20 shots, including 5-of-210 from 3-point territory. Jonathan Rodriguez, who entered
the game leading the Atlantic Sun Conference in scoring (22.1) and
rebounding (11.4), finished with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and
a season-low three boards.
McLean
made 9-of-13 shots from the floor and had six rebounds for Liberty
(6-6), which avenged a 73-70 loss to the Camels on Dec. 15 at Buies
Creek, N.C. Ohman made
5-of-8 from long range.
The
Flames shot 48.9 percent (23-47) from the field on the night and
hit 10-of-23 (.435) triples, plus 12-of-17 from the stripe. Campbell made 40 percent (24-60)
of its shots, 7-of-23 threes (.304), but hit only 6-of-14 from the
line. The Camels held a
38-31 edge on the glass and a 15-5 advantage in second-chance
points.
In its
win over Liberty earlier this month, the Camels made 19-of-23
(.826) free throws.
Liberty
hit eight of its first 10 attempts from the floor, including 4-of-6
threes and jumped to a 20-8 lead on Anthony Smith's triple from the
left wing with 11:27 to play in the opening half. The Camels twice cut the gap to five,
but Ohman hit a pair of threes in the last 35 seconds to give the
Flames a 37-26 lead at the break.
Campbell
missed its
first eight attempts from 3-point range before Bishop hit
three-straight from long distance. Bishop led the Camels with 13 points
and seven rebounds before intermission.
McLean
scored 14
first-half points by hitting his first seven shots. Ohman canned 4-of-6 triples for 12
points in the opening period. Liberty shot 55.6 percent (15-27) from
the floor in the first 20 minutes, including 7-of-16 (.438) from
3-point distance.
Campbell
made just
10-of-26 shots in the opening period (.385), 3-of-13 from the
arc.
The
Camels return home to Carter Gym on Jan. 3 to open Atlantic Sun
Conference play against Lipscomb in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
