CREEK,
N.C. - Shaddean Aaron scored 22 points and Mercer defeated Campbell
81-80 Saturday at Carter Gym in Atlantic Sun Conference men's
basketball action.
It was the second one-point victory for the Bears (12-13, 7-7) over
the Camels this year. On Jan. 13 at Macon, Ga., Mercer rallied for
a 94-93 win on Aaron's tip-in with 1.4 seconds to go.
In a game where the lead changed 10 times and the score was tied on
nine occasions, the Bears did not trail over the last 7:57. After
Ledell Eackles' jumper knotted the score at 73-73 with 1:30 to go,
Mercer hit 8-of-8 from the line in the last 1:08.
Ross Alacqua made a pair of free throws with 9.6 seconds left for
an 81-78 advantage. Campbell's Eric Smith, who finished with a
game-high 25 points, was covered at the top of the key and instead
of attempting a contested three-pointer, passed underneath to
Jonathan Rodriguez, who scored with 0.4 seconds remaining for the
final margin.
James Florence added 17 points and seven assists for Mercer before
fouling out with 2:21 to play. Alacqua finished with 13 on 3-of-5
threes and 4-of-4 from the stripe. Hrvoje Pervan had 11 and seven
rebounds, while Brian Pfohl scored 10 off the bench with seven
boards, five coming on the offensive end.
Mercer improved to 5-2 this year in games decided by five, or
fewer, points, while Campbell dropped to 2-3 in contests decided by
the same margin. The Bears lost a 69-68 decision on Thursday night
at Gardner-Webb after rallying from a 28-point deficit.
On Saturday, Smith hit 25 for the second-straight game on 8-of-17
shots, including 3-of-9 threes, plus 6-of-8 from the line and five
steals. Eackles added 16 points, five assists and six steals. Ruell
Pringle had 13 points and Rodriguez 10 for the Camels, who were
out-rebounded 40-30.
Campbell forced 22 Mercer turnovers that the Camels converted into
26 points, but Mercer scored 23 off 15 Camel miscues. Both teams
finished with the same amount of total (29) and 3-point (7) field
goals, but the Bears knocked down 16-of-21 from the line (.762)
while Campbell made 15-of-19.
The Camels rode a 12-2 burst to an 18-8 lead with 14:32 to play in
the opening period as Pringle had seven points in the flurry.
Mercer, however, reeled off a 14-2 rally to go in front 39-31 and
led 43-39 at the break.
The Bears extended the advantage to nine (39-48) on Pervan's foul
shot with 17:10 left before the Camels scored 10 unanswered points
and led 49-48 with 14:10 left after Pringles' drive. Neither team
led by more than five the rest of the way.
Campbell returns to action on Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. (CST) tap at
Lipscomb.
