JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - Eric Smith
scored eight of his 22 points in overtime and Campbell defeated
Jacksonville 90-85 Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the
Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at the Memorial Center.
Campbell will face second-seeded Belmont in Friday's 9:15 p.m.
semifinal. Belmont (21-9) advanced with a 79-61 win over seventh
seed Gardner-Webb.
Freshman Jonathan Rodriguez posted his 12th double-double for the
sixth-seeded Fighting Camels (14-16), who won their first Atlantic
Sun tournament game since a 67-59 victory at Stetson on Feb. 29,
1996 in the quarterfinal round. Thursday's triumph ended a
seven-game losing streak at the league event for the Camels.
A first-team all-conference and all-freshman team choice, Rodriguez
had 21 points on 7-of-14 shots, plus 7-of-10 from the line to go
along with 11 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the year.
Ledell Eackles, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, added a career-high 10
boards, nine off the defensive glass. Smith finished 7-of-15 from
the field, 6-of-6 from the stripe and made his last two threes
after missing his first four tries from long range.
Jake Wohlfeil (11) and Kyle Vejraska (10) came off the bench to
score in double digits for CU, which stretched its win streak to
three games. Campbell's reserves outscored Jacksonville's bench by
a 29-13 margin.
Senior Jesse Kimbrough led Jacksonville (15-14) with 24 points, 14
in the second half, plus six assists. Lehmon Colbert had 15 on
7-of-16 shooting, while Ben Smith added 14 and Marcus Allen 10,
plus 10 rebounds.
"I thought tonight's victory obviously validates what we've been
trying to do with our program," said fourth-year Campbell head
coach Robbie Laing. "We've been trying to evolve from a so-called
run-and-gun team to one that plays solid on both ends of the floor
night-in and night-out."
Smith canned back-to-back threes and hit a pair of free throws to
stake the Camels to an 86-83 edge with 1:44 remaining.
Jacksonville made just 2-of-9 from the floor in the overtime period
and the Camels hit 6-of-8 from the line to seal the victory.
"We could focus on Eric Smith for making a couple of big threes in
the overtime, or Jake Wohlfeil for hitting a three late in the shot
clock, but really tonight's win was a total team effort," said
Laing. Our guys played with great poise. Maybe this is the kind
of game that energizes our program for the future, not just for
this tournament."
The Camels shot 44.3 percent (27-61) for the game and made 30-of-38
free throws (.789), while holding a 45-36 edge on the glass against
the taller Dolphins.
Campbell wrapped a 16-1 run around half-time and led 51-39 on Russ
Gibson's bucket with 18:00 left. The Fighting Camels led 72-63 on
Bishop's free throw with 5:02 remaining, but Jesse Kimbrough hit
6-straight free throws, then stole the ball from Jake Wohlfeil and
fed Tyrone Curnell for a lay-in with 3:00 to go, cutting the margin
to 72-71.
Rodriguez hit a pair of foul shots to push the gap to 74-71 with
2:24 remaining. The teams swapped misses before Ben Smith hit a
triple from the right wing to knot the game at 74-all with 1:20 to
go. Wohlfeil then drained a trey from the left corner off Smith's
pass to give CU a 77-74 edge with 46.6 seconds left.
Colbert missed a 3 from the left side, Rodriguez rebounded, then
hit the first of two foul shots with 32 seconds left. Allen then
scored underneath to cut the gap to 78-76 with 22 seconds
remaining. Wohlfeil's turnover gave JU the ball with 14 seconds to
go, and Kimbrough's leaner in the paint with 1.3 seconds left sent
the game into overtime.
In a back-and-forth first half, Campbell closed a 9-0 run as Eric
Smith scored three-straight buckets, then Jonathan Rodriguez
dribbled coast-to-coast for a lay-in as the horn sounded for a
44-38 Fighting Camel lead.
The score was tied 10 times and lead changed on nine occasions
during the first 20 minutes. Campbell converted nine Jacksonville
first-period turnovers into an 8-2 edge in points off miscues.
Smith had 12 points in the opening half, while Rodriguez scored 11
for the Camels. Colbert (12) and Kimbrough (10) combined for 22 of
Jacksonville's 38 first-half points.
The Fighting Camels hit just 1-of-10 first-half 3-point field
goals, but made 13-of-17 (.765) from the line. Jacksonville hit
4-of-9 from long range, but made just 2-of-2 from the stripe.
The A-Sun quarterfinal round continues Thursday night when
top-seeded host East Tennessee State faces eighth seed Stetson at
7:00 p.m. Fourth seed Lipscomb meets fifth-seeded Mercer at 9:15
p.m. in the last game of the evening.
