N.C. Casey Wohlleb scored all 21 of his points in the second
half and visiting Florida Gulf Coast rallied for a 78-73 Atlantic
Sun Conference men's basketball win over Campbell Thursday at
Carter Gym.
In a see-saw battle that saw
the lead change 10 times and the score tied on nine occasions in
the second half alone, FGCU (7-13, 3-3) overcame a six-point
deficit in the last 5:00 to end a three-game Camel win
streak.
Roman Narmbaye scored a
career-high 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots
for the Eagles, while Rob Quaintance added 16 points 13 in
the final period plus nine assists.
Jonathan Rodriguez led
Campbell (8-10, 3-3) with 24 points, including 11-of-12 from the
foul line, and 11 rebounds.
Reggie Bishop added 13 and Preston Dodson 11 for the
Camels.
The Camels led 64-59 with
4:51 to go, but Wohlleb and Quaintance hit threes on consecutive
possessions to cut the gap to 66-65; then Narmbaye hit a pair of
foul shots for a 67-66 Eagle edge with 2:35 remaining.
Quaintance's triple put FGSU
in front 70-68, but Julius Perkins tied the game with 1:18 left on
two foul shots. Wohlleb
then made his fourth triple of the half for a 73-70
edge.
The Camels trailed 76-73
after Quaintance hit two from the stripe with 23 seconds remaining,
but squandered two chances to tie the score. Bishop was called for traveling with
17.8 seconds to go.
However, FGCU could not inbound and was whistled for a five-second
violation.
The Camels got the ball back,
but Bishop's pass went out of bounds with seven seconds
remaining. Wohlleb then
provided the final margin with a pair of foul shots with 6.6 ticks
left.
FGCU shot 56.7 percent from
the field in the second half and 50 percent (27-54) on the
game. The Eagles made
8-of-13 (.615) threes in the final period, 12-of-26 from the
line.
Campbell shot 55.6 percent from the
floor in the final stanza (15-27), but only 36 percent (23-64) for
the game. The Camels made
just 8-of-37 shots in the opening half, but trailed by just one
(26-25) at the break.
The Camels host Stetson
Saturday at 4:00 p.m., while FGCU travels to Gardner-Webb for an
8:00 p.m. tap.
