CREEK,
N.C. Eddie Ard hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to force
overtime en route to a career-high 35-point effort Thursday night
to lift visiting Lipscomb over Campbell 86-79 in the Atlantic Sun
Conference opener for both teams at Carter Gym.
Ard made 9-of-21 from the
floor, including 6-of-13 three-pointers, plus 11-of-14 from the
stripe to go along with 10 rebounds. Freshman Brandon Brown added 18 points
of 7-of-14 shooting, plus 4-of-5 free throws, while LaKory Daniels
connected on 5-of-10 from long distance and finished with 17
points.
Jonathan Rodriguez led
Campbell (4-8, 0-1 A-Sun) with 26 points, seven rebounds and four
assists. The sophomore hit
9-of-11 from the line and 8-of-17 from the floor. Jake Wohlfeil chipped in 14 points,
including 4-of-9 threes, while Julius Perkins came off the bench to
add a season-high 13.
Reggie Bishop also hit double figures with 10.
Freshman Junard Hartley dealt
a season-high 10 assists for the Camels, who dropped their
second-straight game.
Seven of the last eight games
between the Camels and Bisons have been decided by seven, or fewer
points. Lipscomb won both
contests last season by a total of four points, including a
one-point decision at Carter Gym.
With Lipscomb trailing 72-69,
Michael Lusk missed a three from the right corner with five seconds
left, but Jason Hopkins pulled down one of his game-high 12
rebounds and kicked the ball out to Ard, who connected for his
fifth triple of the night from deep in the left corner as time
expired.
Lipscomb (7-8, 1-0 A-Sun)
recovered from a 13-point deficit with 7:49 left in regulation to
win its third-straight game, all on the road. Jake Wohlfeil's trey gave the Camels
their largest lead (64-51) of the game, but the Bisons answered
with a 15-4 run and tied the game at 69 on Ard's two free throws
with 1:42 remaining.
After Preston Dodson made the
second of two foul shots to put the Camels in front 70-69, the
Bisons had two chances to take the lead, but missed twice. Wohlfeil fed Oladapo Fagbenle
for a length of the court lay-in with 15 seconds remaining before
Ard's late heroics.
Campbell went 0-of-6 from the floor in
the overtime, but stayed close by hitting 7-of-8 free throws. Lipscomb made just 2-of-4 shots
in extra time, but were from 3-point distance, including Daniels'
triple that pushed LU in front for good at 77-74.
The Bisons opened a 32-22
lead when LaKory Daniels canned his third triple of the first half
with 3:30 remaining.
However, Rodriguez dropped a trey on the next possession to start a
half-ending 12-3 run that brought the Camels within 35-34 at the
break.
Wohlfeil knocked down three
triples in the stretch and finished the half with 11 points, while
Rodriguez added nine. Ard
scored 17 first-half points for Lipscomb, hitting 6-of-10 from the
floor, including 3-of-6 from long distance.
Campbell extended its run to 19-3 and
led 41-35 with 17:13 to go in the second half. CU then built the lead to double
digits when Rodriguez' jumper capped a 9-0 run with 11:27 to play
and pushed the margin to 54-42.
The Camels shot 52 percent
(13-25) in the second half, 42.9 percent (27-63) for the game,
while hitting 7-of-24 (.292) threes and 18-of-24 (.750) from the
line.
Lipscomb shot 37 percent
(27-73) for the night, but hit 12-of-32 (.375) threes and made
20-of-26 free throws. The
Bisons held a 47-41 edge on the glass and turned 19 offensive
boards into a 21-11 advantage in second chance points.
Campbell returns to action on Saturday
in a 4:00 p.m. tip-off at home against defending A-Sun champion
Belmont. Lipscomb travels
to Gardner-Webb Saturday for an 8:15 tap.
