Isaac Butts scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead
Appalachian State to a 79-66 men's basketball win over visiting
Campbell Saturday night at the Holmes Center.
Eduardo Bermudez added 13
points, while Kellen Brand and Donald Sims had nine each for the
Mountaineers (2-2), who made 30-of-44 free throws and held a 45-34
advantage on the boards.
Jonathan Rodriguez led four
Camels in double figures with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Jabril Bailey added 13 points,
Lorne Merthie 11 and Kyle Vejraska 10 for the Camels (2-3), who
shot just 38 percent from the field.
Campbell trailed by 16
(49-33) with 13:06 remaining when Ryann Abraham hit a pair of free
throws, but the Camels answered with a 21-11 run and drew within
60-54 on Rodriguez' steal and lay-up with 6:46 to play. But the Camels got no closer than
seven the rest of the way.
Appalachian hit 6 of its
first 10 three-pointers and led by as many as 19 in the opening
half. The Camels,
conversely, made just 3 of their first 21 shots (.146) and had six
turnovers in the same span as the Mountaineers opened a 29-10 lead
on Butts' bucket in the paint with 5:54 to play.
The Mountaineers led 38-24 at
the break behind Butts' 10 first-half points and nine from
Bermudez. ASU converted 10
offensive rebounds into a 12-0 edge in second-chance points before
intermission.
Rodriguez posted his
second-straight double-double and hit double figure scoring numbers
for the 43rd-straight game.
Appalachian State shot just
38 percent (21-55) from the field, but held a 16-7 edge in
second-chance points thanks to 14 offensive rebounds.
Following final examinations
next week, the Camels return to action Dec. 9 at VMI.
