VMI pulls away from Men's Hoops in second half 88-76

LEXINGTON, VA. – VMI opened the second half on a 16-0 run and went on to defeat Campbell 88-76 Tuesday night at Cameron Hall.

The Keydets (7-2) hit four treys during the burst as Campbell made six turnovers and missed three shots in its first nine possessions of the second period. Campbell (2-4) trailed by just one (39-38) at the break, but was down by 17 before Jabril Bailey's three ended the run with 14:47 remaining.

VMI made 14 three-pointers on the night, converted 26 Campbell turnovers into 39 points and led by as many as 27 (82-55) down the stretch.

Chavis Holmes led four Keydets in double figures with 23 points. Austin Kenon added 15, Travis Holmes 13 and Keith Gabriel 11 for VMI, which made 14-of-43 from long range (.326).

Campbell shot 51 percent from the field, 5-of-12 (.417) from 3-point range, but lost its third-straight, including a 97-92 loss to VMI last month at Buies Creek.

Freshman Amir Celestin scored a season-high 17 points (8-of-10 from the floor) and sophomore Jabril Bailey also hit a season best with 16. Preston Dodson added nine.

Jonathan Rodriguez, who entered the game leading the Atlantic Sun Conference in scoring (22.0) was held without a point and to just one field goal attempt for the first 16-plus minutes of the game. He finished the game with six points on just 3-of-5 shooting and eight boards.

The Keydets led 39-38 at intermission after a first half full of runs. Campbell broke to a 10-3 lead thanks to 10 unanswered points early, but VMI took its largest lead (31-23) thanks to a 17-6 spurt that included three triples.

Campbell, however, answered with a 15-7 burst to tie the score at 38-38 on Amir Celestin's three from the top of the key with 1:08 to go in the half.

Campbell shot 59 percent (17-29) from the floor in the opening period, but committed 12 first-half turnovers that led to a 17-8 Keydet advantage in points off miscues. VMI hit just 37 percent (14-38) from the field before the break, but canned 7 triples in 21 tries.

VMI entered the game as the nation's scoring leader (103.6), has hit the 90-point barrier eight times in nine games, including four 100-point efforts.

The Camels open Atlantic Sun Conference play with a two-game swing at Florida Gulf Coast Saturday (3:15) and Monday at Stetson (7:00).

On Nov. 24 at Buies Creek, VMI hit 19 three-point field goals and held off a late rally to hand Campbell a 97-92 defeat at Gore Arena. Rodriguez led Campbell with a game-high 23 points, plus 14 rebounds last month, but on Tuesday saw his school-record double-figure scoring streak conclude at 43 games.
