LEXINGTON, VA. VMI opened
the second half on a 16-0 run and went on to defeat Campbell 88-76
Tuesday night at Cameron Hall.
The
Keydets (7-2) hit four treys during the burst as Campbell made six
turnovers and missed three shots in its first nine possessions of
the second period. Campbell
(2-4) trailed by just one (39-38) at the break, but was down by 17
before Jabril Bailey's three ended the run with 14:47
remaining.
VMI made
14 three-pointers on the night, converted 26 Campbell turnovers
into 39 points and led by as many as 27 (82-55) down the
stretch.
Chavis
Holmes led four Keydets in double figures with 23 points. Austin Kenon added 15, Travis
Holmes 13 and Keith Gabriel 11 for VMI, which made 14-of-43 from
long range (.326).
Campbell
shot 51
percent from the field, 5-of-12 (.417) from 3-point range, but lost
its third-straight, including a 97-92 loss to VMI last month at
Buies Creek.
Freshman
Amir Celestin scored a season-high 17 points (8-of-10 from the
floor) and sophomore Jabril Bailey also hit a season best with
16. Preston Dodson added
nine.
Jonathan
Rodriguez, who entered the game leading the Atlantic Sun Conference
in scoring (22.0) was held without a point and to just one field
goal attempt for the first 16-plus minutes of the game. He finished the game with six points
on just 3-of-5 shooting and eight boards.
The
Keydets led 39-38 at intermission after a first half full of
runs. Campbell broke to a
10-3 lead thanks to 10 unanswered points early, but VMI took its
largest lead (31-23) thanks to a 17-6 spurt that included three
triples.
Campbell, however, answered
with a 15-7 burst to tie the score at 38-38 on Amir Celestin's
three from the top of the key with 1:08 to go in the half.
Campbell
shot 59
percent (17-29) from the floor in the opening period, but committed
12 first-half turnovers that led to a 17-8 Keydet advantage in
points off miscues. VMI hit
just 37 percent (14-38) from the field before the break, but canned
7 triples in 21 tries.
VMI
entered the game as the nation's scoring leader (103.6), has hit
the 90-point barrier eight times in nine games, including four
100-point efforts.
The Camels open Atlantic Sun
Conference play with a two-game swing at Florida Gulf Coast
Saturday (3:15) and Monday at Stetson (7:00).
On Nov. 24 at Buies Creek,
VMI hit 19 three-point field goals and held off a late rally to
hand Campbell a 97-92 defeat at Gore Arena. Rodriguez led Campbell with a
game-high 23 points, plus 14 rebounds last month, but on Tuesday
saw his school-record double-figure scoring streak conclude at 43
games.
