DeLAND, FLA. Stetson built a
17-point half-time lead, then withstood a late charge by visiting
Campbell to claim a 63-57 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball
victory Monday night at the Edmunds Center.
The Hatters (4-3, 2-0)
improved to 19-2 at home over the last two years (4-0 this season)
after Campbell whittled the margin to just three (59-56) with 22.3
seconds left on Amir Celestin's coast-to-coast lay-in.
However, A.J. Smith and Tim
Lang combined to hit 4-of-6 from the line over the last 21.1 and
the Camels were unable to draw closer and dropped their
fifth-straight game.
Kyle Vejraska led Campbell
(2-6, 0-2) with a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Jonathan Rodriguez added 13 and
nine rebounds, while Junard Hartley had season-highs of 11 points
and nine boards.
Kris Thomas led Stetson with
14 points, while Smith contributed 12 and Lang nine, plus eight
rebounds. The Hatters have
won the last eight games between the teams played in
DeLand.
The Hatters led 50-40 with
7:03 remaining after Lang's lay-up, but the Camels cut into the gap
with a 16-9 run.
Campbell entered the game leading the
A-Sun in team field goal percentage (.482), while rating third in
free throw accuracy (.713).
However, CU hit just 39 percent (23-59) of its attempts from the
field, just 7-of-30 (23 percent) in the opening period.
CU finished 1-of-11 from
3-point range (.092) and made only 9-of-18 foul shots on an evening
where the Camels committed a season-low 10 turnovers.
Stetson shot 37 percent from
the floor, but connected on 9-of-22 (.401) from 3-point territory,
7-of-15 in the opening half.
Campbell returns home Saturday for a
3:15 p.m. tip-off against UNC Pembroke.
