Hatters top Camels 63-56 in A-Sun men's hoops contest

DeLAND, FLA. – Stetson built a 17-point half-time lead, then withstood a late charge by visiting Campbell to claim a 63-57 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball victory Monday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (4-3, 2-0) improved to 19-2 at home over the last two years (4-0 this season) after Campbell whittled the margin to just three (59-56) with 22.3 seconds left on Amir Celestin's coast-to-coast lay-in.

However, A.J. Smith and Tim Lang combined to hit 4-of-6 from the line over the last 21.1 and the Camels were unable to draw closer and dropped their fifth-straight game.

Kyle Vejraska led Campbell (2-6, 0-2) with a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Jonathan Rodriguez added 13 and nine rebounds, while Junard Hartley had season-highs of 11 points and nine boards.

Kris Thomas led Stetson with 14 points, while Smith contributed 12 and Lang nine, plus eight rebounds. The Hatters have won the last eight games between the teams played in DeLand.

The Hatters led 50-40 with 7:03 remaining after Lang's lay-up, but the Camels cut into the gap with a 16-9 run.

Campbell entered the game leading the A-Sun in team field goal percentage (.482), while rating third in free throw accuracy (.713). However, CU hit just 39 percent (23-59) of its attempts from the field, just 7-of-30 (23 percent) in the opening period.

CU finished 1-of-11 from 3-point range (.092) and made only 9-of-18 foul shots on an evening where the Camels committed a season-low 10 turnovers.

Stetson shot 37 percent from the floor, but connected on 9-of-22 (.401) from 3-point territory, 7-of-15 in the opening half.

Campbell returns home Saturday for a 3:15 p.m. tip-off against UNC Pembroke.
