Mercer Rallies for 75-70 Men's Basketball Win Over Campbell

MACON, GA. – Shaddean Aaron and James Florence combined for 30 points in the second half and Mercer rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to claim a 75-70 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball win over visiting Campbell Saturday at the University Center.

Aaron scored a game-high 22 points, 14 in the final period, while Florence had 16 of his 18 – including 3-of-4 from 3-point range – in the last 10:58 of play. Florence, who entered the game as the A-Sun's second leading scorer (18.9 points per game), started the night 0-of-8 from the floor, 0-of-3 from 3-point territory, before making 5-of-6 shots down the stretch. Brian Pfohl added 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting for Mercer (10-14, 5-6), which ended a four-game losing streak.

Campbell led 51-41 with 11:08 to go, but Mercer answered with a 29-11 run to take its largest lead of the night at 70-62 on Florence's lay-in with 2:56 remaining. Florence scored 14 points and Aaron 11 during the decisive stretch for the Bears.

Jake Wohlfeil's triple pulled the Camels within 72-70 with 17.8 seconds remaining; then Mark Hall missed one of two free throws to give Campbell a chance to tie. However, Reggie Bishop's three-point attempt to tie the score at 73-all with five seconds left went in-and-out. Hall then hit a pair of foul shots with one second remaining to secure the final score.

Wohlfeil and Reggie Bishop led Campbell (10-13, 5-6) with 19 points apiece. Wohlfeil made 6-of-11 3-pointers on the night, grabbed 5 rebounds and dealt four assists. Bishop hit 4-of-11 threes and scored 16 in the opening period as the Camels took a 37-33 lead at half-time. Jonathan Rodriguez, who entered the contest as the league's scoring leader (20.9), added 14 points and 12 rebounds for his 14th double-double in 23 games. Kyle Vejraska scored 10 points in 14 minutes of action before fouling out.

A sophomore from Miami, Fla., Rodriguez became the 24th Camel to reach 1,000 career points during the school's senior college era (since 1961). At the 3:24 mark of the first half, Rodriguez tied Cordell Wise (1967-70) for the school record as the fastest player to reach the 1,000 point barrier (1009 points in 54 games). In addition on Saturday evening, Rodriguez became the seventh player in school Division I history (since 1977-78) to pull down 500 career rebounds (502).

Each of the last six games – and eight of the past nine – between Campbell and Mercer has been decided by two possessions (six, or fewer, points). Mercer claimed both meetings during 2006-07 by a single point (94-93 at Macon and 81-80 at Buies Creek).

Campbell made 7-of-15 (.467) threes in the opening period and led by four at the break. However, the Camels shot just 31 percent (10-32) from the field in the second half. Mercer shot 44 percent from the floor in the final stanza and made 14-of-23 from the free throw line (.609). For the night, Mercer hit 20-of-32 from the stripe (.625), while Campbell finished 10-of-12 (.833) from the charity line.

Overall, Mercer hit 47 percent of its attempts from the field (25-53) and 5-of-14 (.357) from 3-point territory. Campbell shot 39 percent (25-64) from the floor, 10-of-25 (.400) from beyond the arc, and held a 37-35 advantage on the glass.

Campbell returns to Carter Gym for a 7:00 p.m. start Wednesday against Longwood.
