Shaddean Aaron and James Florence combined for 30 points in
the second half and Mercer rallied from a 10-point deficit in the
second half to claim a 75-70 Atlantic Sun Conference men's
basketball win over visiting Campbell Saturday at the University
Center.
Aaron
scored a game-high 22 points, 14 in the final period, while
Florence had 16 of his 18 including 3-of-4 from 3-point
range in the last 10:58 of play. Florence, who entered the game as the
A-Sun's second leading scorer (18.9 points per game), started the
night 0-of-8 from the floor, 0-of-3 from 3-point territory, before
making 5-of-6 shots down the stretch. Brian Pfohl added 17 points on 6-of-9
shooting for Mercer (10-14, 5-6), which ended a four-game losing
streak.
Campbell led 51-41 with 11:08 to go,
but Mercer answered with a 29-11 run to take its largest lead of
the night at 70-62 on Florence's lay-in with 2:56 remaining. Florence scored 14 points and
Aaron 11 during the decisive stretch for the Bears.
Jake
Wohlfeil's triple pulled the Camels within 72-70 with 17.8 seconds
remaining; then Mark Hall missed one of two free throws to give
Campbell a chance to tie.
However, Reggie Bishop's three-point attempt to tie the score at
73-all with five seconds left went in-and-out. Hall then hit a pair of foul shots
with one second remaining to secure the final score.
Wohlfeil and Reggie Bishop
led Campbell (10-13, 5-6) with 19 points apiece. Wohlfeil made 6-of-11 3-pointers on
the night, grabbed 5 rebounds and dealt four assists. Bishop hit 4-of-11 threes and scored 16
in the opening period as the Camels took a 37-33 lead at half-time.
Jonathan Rodriguez, who entered the contest as the league's scoring
leader (20.9), added 14 points and 12 rebounds for his 14th
double-double in 23 games.
Kyle Vejraska scored 10 points in 14 minutes of action before
fouling out.
A sophomore from Miami, Fla.,
Rodriguez became the 24th Camel to reach 1,000 career points during
the school's senior college era (since 1961). At the 3:24 mark of the first half,
Rodriguez tied Cordell Wise (1967-70) for the school record as the
fastest player to reach the 1,000 point barrier (1009 points in 54
games). In addition on
Saturday evening, Rodriguez became the seventh player in school
Division I history (since 1977-78) to pull down 500 career rebounds
(502).
Each of the last six games
and eight of the past nine between Campbell and
Mercer has been decided by two possessions (six, or fewer,
points). Mercer claimed
both meetings during 2006-07 by a single point (94-93 at Macon and
81-80 at Buies Creek).
Campbell made 7-of-15 (.467) threes in
the opening period and led by four at the break. However, the Camels shot just 31
percent (10-32) from the field in the second half. Mercer shot 44 percent from the floor
in the final stanza and made 14-of-23 from the free throw line
(.609). For the night,
Mercer hit 20-of-32 from the stripe (.625), while Campbell finished
10-of-12 (.833) from the charity line.
Overall, Mercer hit 47
percent of its attempts from the field (25-53) and 5-of-14 (.357)
from 3-point territory.
Campbell shot 39 percent (25-64) from the floor, 10-of-25 (.400)
from beyond the arc, and held a 37-35 advantage on the
glass.
Campbell returns to Carter Gym for a
7:00 p.m. start Wednesday against Longwood.
