BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. Longwood scored 27 points off 21 Campbell turnovers and
the Lancers defeated Campbell 83-80 Wednesday in men's basketball
action at Carter Gym.
Kirk Williams scored 22
points including the 1000th of his career to lead
five Lancers in double figures. Lamar Barrett added 17, Billy Robinson
Jr., 17, while Ryan Bogan and Kevin Swecker chipped in 13 apiece
for Longwood (7-22), which won for only the second time in 19 games
away from home this year.
Jonathan Rodriguez led
Campbell (10-14) with 28 points and seven rebounds. Kyle Vejraska added 17 on 7-of-8
shooting, including 3-of-3 from long range. Reggie Bishop scored 12 and Preston
Dodson 11 for the Camels.
Campbell wrapped a 21-2 run around
half-time to claim a 43-38 lead. However, Williams had eight points in
a 13-0 run capped by Robinson's bucket with 6:35 left that put the
Lancers ahead for good (64-55). CU cut the margin to four on four
different occasions, but got no closer until Rodriguez' bucket at
the final horn.
The Camels made 54 percent
(29-54) of their shots, but hit just 7-of-19 threes (6-of-14 in the
second period). Longwood
had 17 turnovers, but the Camels converted those miscues into only
nine points.
LU shot 48 percent (28-58)
from the floor, made 9-of-21 triples (.429) and 18-of-26 (.692)
from the stripe in splitting a two-game series with CU this
season. Campbell, which won
82-80 at Farmville, Va., last month, connected on 15-of-21 from the
stripe, but got to the line only six times in the final
stanza.
Longwood hit 15 of its first
28 shots and went ahead 36-22 on Barrett's jumper that capped a
10-2 burst with 3:56 left in the half. However, on the next possession,
Barrett picked up his third personal foul and was whistled for his
fourth on a technical that sent Campbell on a 10-2 half-closing
run.
The Lancers led 38-32 at the
break on the strength of 6-of-12 shooting from 3-point range and a
12-3 edge in points off turnovers. Campbell also missed three front ends
of one-and-one free throw opportunities in the opening
period.
Campbell returns to Atlantic Sun
Conference action on Saturday at Gardner-Webb (8:15).
