CREEK,
N.C. USC Upstate wrapped a 17-3 run around half time and
went on to a 79-58 win over Campbell Thursday in Atlantic Sun men's
basketball action at Carter Gym.
The Spartans (7-21, 5-9) hit
a season-high point total and handed Campbell its worst home court
loss since a 100-76 setback to East Tennessee State on Jan. 9,
2007. Upstate shot 54
percent from the floor (13-24) in the final half, 46 percent for
the game.
Luke Payne led Upstate (7-21,
5-9) with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-8
threes. Rashawn Brailsford
added 13, including 4-of-5 threes, plus five assists, while Mezie
Uzochukwu chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds.
USC Upstate closed the first
period on a 9-1 run as the Camels went the last 4:47 of the half
without a field goal. The
Spartans extended the run to 17-3 to lead 46-31 with 15:35
remaining as the Camels missed six of their first seven shots in
the second half. The
visitors led by as many as 23 late in the contest.
Jonathan Rodriguez led
Campbell (10-16, 5-8) with 17 points and 14 rebounds. The sophomore notched his
34th-straight double-figure scoring game, but hit only 5-of-13
shots, 7-of-11 from the line. Kyle Vejraska and Jake Wohlfeil added
10 for the Camels, who lost their fourth-straight game.
Campbell shot just 29 percent (9-31)
in the second half, 36.5 percent (19-52) for the game. Upstate made 11-of-28 threes (.393),
while the Camels hit only 3-of-16 (.188) from long
range.
Campbell hosts East Tennessee State
Monday at 8:15 p.m. in the final men's basketball game at
55-year-old Carter Gym. CU
moves into the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center next fall. USC Upstate returns to action
Saturday in an 8:15 tip-off at Gardner-Webb.
