Jonathan Rodriguez led four double figure scorers with 20 points
and Campbell defeated Kennesaw State 75-55 in Atlantic Sun
Conference men's basketball action Thursday at Carter Gym.
Reggie Bishop
(16), Preston Dodson (14) and Jake Wohlfeil (11) also scored in
double digits for the Fighting Camels (10-12, 5-5), who ended the
game on a 16-3 run over the last 4:20 to claim their second win in
a row.
Jon-Michael
Nickerson scored a season-high 17 points and Shuan Stegall added 12
plus nine rebounds for the Owls (6-18, 3-7), who fell to 0-12 on
the road this season.
Kennesaw senior Ronell Wooten entered the game averaging 19.9
points in nine outings against conference foes, but was held
scoreless in the first half after playing just 10 minutes due to
foul trouble. He finished
the night with just six points on 2-of-10
shooting.
Campbell
scored the
final five points of the first half, including a triple from
Wohlfeil at the buzzer to take a 32-25 lead at the break. The Camels increased the edge to
42-30 with 15:29 remaining in the contest.
Kennesaw
whittled the margin to 46-40 by hitting 6-of-its first 10 shots in
the final period, but the Owls went cold over the last 11
minutes. KSU made just 4 of
its last 17 (.235) attempts from the floor, while the Camels shot
56 percent for the second half.
After
Nickerson's bucket cut the Camel lead to 59-52 with 5:49 to go, the
Owls missed their last 10 shots from the floor and had four of
their 20 turnovers in the same span.
Rodriguez
finished the night shooting 7-of-13 from the field and 6-of-9 from
the line. He grabbed a
game-high 12 rebounds, and had two assists, two blocks and three
steals. The sophomore from
Miami, Fla., now has 995 points in 53 career games and is just five
points shy of becoming the 24th player in Campbell's senior college
era (since 1961) to reach 1000 points.
Bishop hit
3-of-6 threes and 5-of-9 shots overall, while dealing four assists
in addition to his 16-point effort. Dodson, a 6-foot-5 freshman, made
5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line while pulling down
six rebounds. Wohlfeil
canned 3-of-6 triples while hitting double figures in his
ninth-straight game. Junard Hartley dealt eight
assists.
A 17-2 run gave
the Camels a 17-6 lead in the first 4:50 of play, but Kennesaw
rallied with a 14-3 flurry to knot the score at 20-all with 6:44
remaining in the opening half.
Campbell finished the night shooting
53 percent (26-49) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-15)
from 3-point range.
Kennesaw connected on just 36 percent (20-55) of its attempts and
only 4-of-24 threes (.167).
Campbell finished with a 36-29 edge on the boards and had 21
turnovers, but finished with a 20-14 advantage in points off
miscues.
The Camels travel to
Macon, Ga., for a 5:00 p.m. tap on Saturday against
Mercer.
