NASHVILLE, TENN. Justin Hare scored 17
points and top-seeded Belmont held off a second-half surge by
Campbell to defeat the Camels 75-66 Wednesday night in the
quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament at
Allen Arena.
Belmont led by 19 early in the second
half only to see the Camels charge back to cut the gap to
four. However, the Bruins
canned 10-straight free throws in the last 2:17 to win their
11th-straight game.
The Bruins (23-8) will meet
the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal between fourth-seeded East
Tennessee State and fifth seed Lipscomb in the semifinal round on
Friday at 8:15 p.m. (cst).
Shane Dansby added 12 points
and eight rebounds for Belmont which won for the 14th time in 15
outings following an 83-75 setback at Campbell on Jan. 5. Matthew Dotson chipped in
10. Hare finished with five
assists, while making 5-of-9 from the floor, 2-of-4 from 3-point
range and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
The eighth-seeded Camels
(10-20) dropped their eighth-straight game to end the season. Kyle Vejraska came off the bench
to score a season-high 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting with five
rebounds and three blocks.
Jonathan Rodriguez added 17 points, eight boards and four
assists. Jake Wohlfeil
chipped in 10.
Belmont scored the first four points
of the second period and led 48-29 before Campbell went on an 18-3
run. Rodriguez had eight
points in the burst, including a 17-foot jumper that cut the gap to
51-47 with 11:36 remaining.
Oladapo Fagbenle's bucket
underneath off Rodriguez' behind the head pass cut the margin to
60-56 with 5:19 to go.
However, Rodriguez the A-Sun's leading scorer at 21 points
per game went down with 4:19 remaining with an injury to his
left foot. The first-team
all-conference performer returned briefly, but was visibly
hobbled.
Campbell took its first lead (12-10)
on Vejraska's dunk with 13:39 left in the first half. However, Belmont answered with a 14-1
run capped by Hare's 3-point play to build a 24-13
lead with 9:10 to play. The
Bruins led by as many as 17 in the opening period before taking a
44-29 edge into the dressing room.
Hare scored 11 first-half
points and dealt four assists (all on 3-point baskets) as Belmont
hit 7-of-16 from 3-point range before the break. The Bruins made 52 percent of their
first-period shots (16-31) and converted 7 offensive rebounds into
a 12-4 advantage in second-chance points.
Campbell, meanwhile, missed all 6 of
its attempts beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes and shot just
39 percent (11-28) from the field overall. Vejraska led the Camels with 10
first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Rodriguez added nine,
plus six rebounds.
Belmont made just 1-of-8 from 3-point
range in the final period, 8-of-24 for the game. Belmont hit 43 percent (23-54) of his
shots, 30 percent (7-23) in the second half, but made 14 offensive
rebounds turn into a 16-6 advantage in second-chance
points.
Campbell shot 42 percent (22-53) for
the field, but committed 19 turnovers, which the Bruins converted
into a 22-11 advantage in points off miscues.
