NASHVILLE, TENN. Belmont wrapped a 45-9
run around half-time and went on to a 87-54 Atlantic Sun Conference
men's basketball win over Campbell Saturday night at the Curb Event
Center.
After leading 38-22 at the
break, the Bruins (8-6, 4-1) made their first eight shots of the
second half, including five threes while outscoring the Camels 25-5
over the first 6:56 of the period.
Alex Renfroe led five Bruins
in double figures with 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting, plus six
rebounds. Shane Dansby
added 14, while Matthew Dotson, Andy Wicke and Keaton Belcher had
13 apiece.
Belmont entered the game ranked third
in the country in three-point field goals made per game (10.6) and
canned a season-best 15 (in 25 attempts) on the night. Belmont shot 61 percent (33-54)
overall from the field, 67 percent (18-27) in the second
half.
Two nights after a
last-second 69-68 win at Lipscomb, Campbell (6-9, 3-3) fell to 0-10
all-time against the 3-time defending A-Sun champions in Nashville,
0-9 at the Curb Center.
Matt Gwynne led the Camels
with 13 points, while Jonathan Rodriguez added 11, plus seven
rebounds and four assists.
Chris Reynolds came off the bench to add nine points and five
boards. The Camels made
just 34 percent of the shots and hit just 2-of-20 three-point
attempts.
After Gwynne's three from the
right wing tied the score at 18-18 with 9:27 to play, Belmont
closed the first half on a 20-4 run.
The Camels missed 14 of their
last 16 shots in the opening period. The Bruins shot 56 percent (15-27)
from the floor, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range in the first
stanza. Campbell made just
9-of-27 (33 percent) from the field, 2-of-12 from long distance in
the first half.
Campbell returns to Gore Arena next
Saturday (Jan. 17) for a 3:15 p.m. tip-off against
Jacksonville.
