N.C. Campbell opened the second half on a 22-4 run and went
on to defeat Florida Gulf Coast 78-62 in Atlantic Sun men's
basketball action
Wednesday at the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center/Gilbert Craig
Gore Arena.
Jonathan Rodriguez scored
eight of his game-high 21 points during the stretch and Lorne
Merthie added 9 points on 3-of-3 triples for the Camels (8-12,
5-6), who ended a two-game losing streak, while improving to 7-2 at
home this year. Gulf Coast dropped to 0-10 on the road.
Rodriguez, who added 11
rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season, was the lone
Camel to score in double digits, but Merthie, Junard Hartley,
William Kossangue and Matt Gwynne finished with nine each. Hartley added eight assists and
three steals, while Merthie and Rodriguez both had three pilfers as
well.
Campbell finished with a 27-9
advantage in points off turnovers against FGCU (9-14, 5-7), which
committed 26 miscues on the night. Rodriguez made 8-of-13 shots from the
floor and 4-of-5 from the line in 32 minutes.
Kyle Marks and Chad
Lutkenhaus led the Eagles with 12 points each. Reed Baker and Delvin Franklin added
nine.
The Camels shot 50 percent in
the second half, 6-of-11 (.545) from 3-point distance and 8-of-9
from the free throw line.
For the game, Campbell shot 44 percent from the floor, 36 percent
(9-25) from beyond the arc, and made 13-of-15 (.867) foul
shots.
Rodriguez' 3-point play
capped Campbell's opening burst in the final period and gave the
Camels their largest lead (23 points) at 56-33 with 15:28 to
play.
Florida Gulf Coast made 47.5
percent of its shots, but just 5-13 from the bonus arc, while
sinking 19-of-24 (.792) from the stripe. Campbell finished with a 33-29 edge on
the glass, scoring 18 second-chance points off 16 offensive
rebounds.
Campbell took advantage of 17 Gulf
Coast turnovers in the first half and led 34-29 at the break. The Camels committed 12 miscues
in the opening period, but held a 16-6 edge in points off
mistakes.
Rodriguez' layup in traffic
with 7:14 left in the opening period knotted the score for the
seventh time in the period and started an 11-2 Camel run. His steal, lay-up on the break
and foul shot gave the Camels a 24-21 edge and was the seventh time
in the period the lead changed hands.
Kossangue and Rodriguez
scored nine first-half points each, while Gwynne added 7 for CU,
which shot just 38 percent before the break, but scored 11
second-chance points off 11 offensive boards in the
span.
The Camels return to action
Saturday at Kennesaw State in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
