CREEK,
N.C. Jonathan Rodriguez had a double-double to lead Campbell
to a 72-57 win over Mercer Saturday in an Atlantic Sun Conference
men's basketball contest Saturday at Gore Arena.
The 6-foot-5 junior finished
with a game-high 19 points, 12 in the second half, and added 13
rebounds for his 33rd career double-double. Miles Taylor added 15 points on 6-of-8
shooting, plus five boards, while Junard Hartley scored a
season-best 13 points all after the break and dealt a
career-high 12 assists.
James Florence led Mercer
(7-7, 1-2) with 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting, while E.J. Kusnyer
chipped in 11. Daniel
Emerson finished with nine points, just one in the final period,
and a career-high 20 rebounds. The 6-foot-8 junior made just 3-of-9
free throws as the Bears connected on just 12-of-25 (.480) from the
stripe.
Campbell (4-8,
1-2), which entered the game second in the league in rebounding
behind the Bears, finished with a 44-38 edge on the boards and
canned 19-of-28 foul shots (.679), plus 7-of-16 (.438) from 3-point
range. The Camels shot 40
percent from the field overall.
Mercer, which
earlier this year defeated Alabama and Auburn and lost to Georgia
Tech in overtime, shot just 36 percent from the floor and hit
just 3-of-18 from long distance (.167).
The Camels rode a 12-2 run to
take a 27-20 lead on Matt Gwynne's three from the left corner with
4:31 left in the opening period.
CU led 30-26 at the break
behind Taylor's 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Rodriguez and Gwynne each had seven
first-half points for the Camels, who shot 38.5 percent from the
floor, but hit 5-of-9 threes (.556).
Mercer was able to cut the
margin to one point on three occasions in the final period, the
last with 15:20 to go on Florence's two foul shots that pulled the
Bears within 36-35.
However, the Camels stretched the gap to double digits with a 14-5
flurry over the next 3:19 as Lorne Merthie had a pair of
three-point buckets in the stretch.
The margin was just six after
Michael Ellis canned two free throws with 4:12 to play and brought
the Bears within 55-49, but CU stretched the gap to as many as 17
when Preston Dodson's three-point play with 0:58 to go capped a
15-4 burst.
Rodriguez moved into 13th
place past Scott Neely (1377 points from 1991-96) on Campbell's
all-time scoring list at the 11:01 mark of the second half. Rodriguez has 1385 points in his
CU career, second-most among juniors in the NCAA Division I
ranks. He also became CU's
all-time leader in free throws attempted for the Division I era
(since 1977-78) with 543 in just his 73rd career game.
The Camels continue their
two-game home stand against Kennesaw State Monday at 8:00
p.m.
