WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington jumped to a 17-2 lead and never
trailed Monday in a 79-59 win over Campbell at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks (4-5) held Campbell to 25 percent shooting in the
opening half and 35.5 percent for the game. UNCW made 6-of-12
threes in the first period, 9-of-21 for the night, and shot 52
percent from the floor.
Guard Chad Tomko scored 21 points, including 7-of-7 from the line,
grabbed six rebounds and dealt five assists. Montez Downey added
11 points, while John Fields finished with eight points, nine
rebounds and six blocked shots.
Miles Taylor led Campbell (5-3) with a season-high 13 points and
seven rebounds off the bench. CU forward Jonathan Rodriguez
entered the game ranked fourth among Atlantic Sun Conference
scoring leaders (17.7), but was held to season lows of seven points
and three boards.
The Camels made only 15-of-29 from the line for a season-low 52
percent.
Campbell finished the game 0-for-6 from 3-point range to end a
streak of 363-consecutive outings with at least one 3-point field
goal. The last time the Camels did not make at least one trey was
Dec. 27, 1996 when CU went 0-of-12 from beyond the arc at Boise
State.
UNCW made 6 of its first 10 shots, including 3-of-5 from 3-point
range and opened a 17-2 lead with 11:33 left in the first half.
The Seahawks canned 5 of their first 7 triples and led 39-16 at the
break.
Campbell missed its first six attempts from the floor and hit just
6 of 24 (.250) in the opening period. UNCW shot 50 percent from
the field in the same span (13-26).
Downey led UNCW with 10 first half points, including 2-of-3 from
distance and 4-of-5 from the line. Tomko added 8 on 2-of-4
triples.
The Camels rode a 10-1 run that cut the gap to 43-26 with 17:26
remaining on Rodriguez' bucket, but got no closer.
Campbell returns to action Saturday in a 3:15 p.m. tip-off at home
against Atlantic Sun Conference rival Jacksonville. UNCW hosts
Wake Forest Wednesday (7:00).
