FARMVILLE, VA. - Longwood built a 20-point advantage then withstood
a furious Campbell rally and held on for an 88-80 win Tuesday night
at Willett Hall.
The Lancers led 65-45 with 13:47 remaining on Dana Smith's 3-point
play. However, Campbell answered with a 20-4 run and cut the gap
to 69-65 on Miles Taylor's drive with 7:07 left. Jonathan
Rodriguez' stick back with 6:17 remaining cut the gap to 71-67, but
the Camels could get no closer.
Antwan Carter came off the bench to lead five Longwood (3-9) double
figure scorers with 19 points and nine rebounds. Dana Smith had 16
points, Aaron Mitchell 15, Billy Robinson, Jr. 12 and Kevin Swecker
11 for the Lancers, who won their third in the last four games.
Jonathan Rodriguez led Campbell (6-4) with season highs of 25
points and 13 rebounds. The senior hit 9-of-10 from the field and
7-of-8 from the line. Amir Celestin came off the Campbell bench to
score a season-high 14 points, 12 in the final period, while Taylor
equaled his season-best output with 13 and Preston Dodson added
nine.
Longwood shot 53 percent from the field (33-62) and hit 6-of-23 (26
percent) from 3-point point territory. Campbell hit 49 percent
(28-57) of its shots, but only 3-of-12 (.250) from long
distance.
Longwood took a 50-37 lead at half-time, hitting 56 percent (20-36)
of its shots, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range. The 50 points
marked the most Campbell has surrendered in one period this
season.
Campbell shot 55 percent (12-22) from the floor, but committed 14
first-half turnovers, which the Lancers converted into 20
points.
Mitchell's layup in transition capped an 18-4 Longwood run and gave
the Lancers an 18-8 advantage with 12:27 left in the half.
Campbell committed eight turnovers in the first 7:27 of play.
The Lancers and Camels have met four times in the last four years
and each contest has been decided by 8, or fewer, points.
Campbell returns to action next Wednesday (Dec. 30) at home vs.
Appalachian State (8:00 p.m.).
