BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Lorne Merthie scored a career-high 24 points on
9-of-11 shooting and Campbell never trailed while handing
Appalachian State a 92-63 loss Wednesday night at the Pope
Center/Gore Arena.
The Camels jumped to a 22-6 lead, and the Mountaineers were able to
cut the margin to single digits just once (27-18 with 8:01
remaining) the rest of the night.
Jonathan Rodriguez added 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists
and five steals for the Camels (7-4), while Preston Dodson matched
his career-high with 16 points on 7-of-9 from the floor. Campbell
is off to its best 11-game start to a season since the 1993-94 club
was 8-3 at the same point.
Donald Sims led Appalachian (7-6) with 16 points, plus seven
assists, and became the 29th player in Mountaineer history to reach
1,000 points for his career. Sims now has an even 1,000 in 75
career games. Jeremi Booth added 15 points and six boards for the
Mountaineers, while Ryann Abraham had 11.
Campbell entered the game ranked among the nation's top 10 in
steals per game, and had 11 thefts on the night. 27 of Campbell's
season-high 92 points came as a result of 19 Appalachian
turnovers. Meanwhile, the Camels committed a season-low 7 miscues,
just three in the first half, while improving to 6-1 at home this
year (the lone loss a 71-60 setback to Virginia Tech).
The Camels shot 62 percent in the opening half (18-29), hitting
6-of-11 threes, and led by 15 (48-33) at the break.
Appalachian was able to cut the gap to 64-52 on Josh Hunter's foul
shot with 13:48 remaining, but Campbell answered with a 13-0 run as
five different players scored during the stretch. The Camels led
by as many as 30 down the stretch.
Merthie was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field in the second half,
3-of-3 from long distance, while scoring 15 points after the
break. Junard Hartley finished with 10 assists and just one
turnover in 29 minutes. Amir Celestin added six assists and no
turnovers in 23 minutes off the bench.
The Camels finished the night shooting 58.6 percent (34-58) from
the field, 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from 3-point territory, and
canned 14-of-16 free throws (.875). Appalachian hit 44.7 percent
(21-47) of its shots, 4-of-18 (.222) from long range.
Campbell ended an 11-game losing streak against current Southern
Conference members, dating to an 84-70 victory on Jan. 20, 1997 at
Wofford. Campbell's victory was the first against Appalachian
since February 1984, but the teams did not play for 21 seasons
until the series resumed in 2006-07.
Campbell returns to Atlantic Sun Conference play Saturday in a 2:00
p.m. tip-off at USC Upstate.
