BUIES
CREEK, N.C.
Sophomore second baseman Ellis Lowe led the Camels with six runs,
five hits and three RBI to open the season as Campbell swept North
Carolina A&T in doubleheader baseball action on Friday
afternoon at Taylor Field. Campbell moves to 2-0 on
the season, after winning game one 16-5 and game two 10-3.
Ryan
Hamme started his senior campaign with an impressive opening day
outing. The Wilmington,
N.C. native was credited with the win after pitching five innings
and allowing just two earned runs on six hits. Hamme also fanned six batters in his
'09 debut, while NC A&T's Nick Rogers suffered the loss after
going just 2.1 innings on the hill.
Ellis
Lowe paced the Camels in game one as he finished 3-of-4, with three
RBI. Lowe's efforts were
complimented by Senior Matt Keen's two hits and three RBI, as well
as the trio of Chris Bangi, Alex Aycoth, and Josh Holskey who
combined for seven RBI. Xavier Macklin led the Aggies by going
3-of-5 from the dish with two RBI.
Game
two saw redshirt sophomore Daniel Gardo get the start, but it would
be Logan Davis who would be awarded the victory. The junior college transfer from Ft.
Cobb, Okla. pitched 4.1 innings, while allowing zero runs on just
one hit.
Zach
Johnson was the leader at the plate for the Camels in game two, as
the junior finished 2-of-4, with four RBI. The Camels also received significant
production from Lowe, Hamme, and Aycoth in game two. Lowe finished 2-of-3, with one RBI,
while Hamme and Aycoth each finished with two hits and one
RBI. Cyril Daniel paced NC
A&T, finishing with a homerun and two RBI.
The
Camels quickly jumped on the scoreboard in 2009. After Lowe walked and Hamme singled,
Matt Keen singled through the left side. This allowed Lowe and Hamme to score,
which gave Campbell a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Campbell
would post three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. NC A&T (0-2) scored a single
run in the top half of the third, only to have that answered by
eight Camel runs in the bottom of the third, which was capped with
a grand slam by freshman Josh Holskey.
In
game two, the Camels again posted two runs in the bottom of the
first inning. However this
time around it would be answered by NC A&T in the top of the
second when Cyril Daniel hit a two-run homerun to straight away
center field.
Zach
Johnson's double to left center field brought home two runs in the
fourth. Campbell would wind up
posting five runs between the fourth and fifth innings.
Those two runs would prove to be enough, as Campbell went on to win
game two 10-3.
This
is the second straight season that the Camels have started 2-0,
last year's squad finished with a 21-37 mark, including 13-20 in
league play. This is also
only the second time in Camel baseball history that the Campbell
has won back to back season openers. The Camels defeated Dayton in the 2008
opener, 7-5.
Campbell
returns to the diamond tomorrow vs. NC A&T, first pitch at
Taylor Field is slated for 1 p.m.
