BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. Campbell closed the game on a 12-2 run and went on to
defeat East Tennessee State 68-62 Monday night at the John W. Pope
Jr. Convocation Center/Gilbert Craig Gore Arena.
Campbell (13-15, 10-9 A-Sun) held the
Bucs (18-10, 12-6) without a field goal for the last 4:13 of play
and to just 27 percent shooting in the second half. Kyle Vejraska tied a school record
with seven blocked shots, four in the last 2:02 of play, and the
Camels won their third straight game.
Freshman guard Lorne Merthie
scored 20 points to lead the Camels, Matt Gwynne added 14 and
Jonathan Rodriguez had 11 points and 14 rebounds for his 10th
double-double of the year and 39th of his career. Vejraska finished with nine points and
five boards in addition to his seven rejections for the Camels, who
rallied from a half-time deficit to win for the second-straight
game.
Mike Smith led ETSU with a
career-high 25 points on 10-of-23 shooting, but Kevin Tiggs, who
entered the game leading the league in scoring at better than 21
points per game, was held nine below his average to 12 on 4-of-13
from the field.
Freshman Adam Sollazzo dealt
12 assists and scored nine points. Courtney Pigram, who came in averaging
17.4 per outing, 3rd-highest in the conference, finished with only
2 points on 1-for-8 from the floor.
"I thought we had a very slow
start for the second game in a row for whatever reason, I don't
know," said Campbell head coach Robbie Laing. "The fact that we played a number of
guys and had fresh players down the stretch enabled us to make a
run."
Campbell trailed by as many as 14 late
in the first half, but scored eight-straight points around the half
to cut the margin. ETSU led
56-46 with 8:15 to play before the Camels reeled off a 10-1 run,
capped by Vejraska's dunk off a baseline out of bounds pass from
Junard Hartley that pulled CU within 57-56 with 4:49
remaining.
Smith's 3-point play pushed
the Buc lead to 60-56 with 4:14, but ETSU missed its final eight
attempts from the field. CU's last field goal came on Hartley's
bucket with 3:54 to go, but the Camels went 10-of-10 from the free
throw line in the last 3:23 to claim their 10th A-Sun win of the
year.
The last time CU won 10
league games was 2000 when the Camels finished 10-8.
Campbell out-rebounded the Bucs by
eight (44-38) and won in spite of hitting just 38 percent (21-55)
from the field. CU,
however, made more free throws (20-of-27) than the visitors
attempted (12-of-16) and limited ETSu to 36 percent shooting
(24-66) from the floor, 2-of-11 from 3-point range
(.182).
ETSU jumped to a 19-8 lead in
the first 7:30 on the strength of 8-of-14 (.571) shooting. The Bucs led by as many as 14 in
the opening half before Gwynne scored on a 3-point play and Merthie
connected on a triple from the left corner as the horn sounded to
cut the half-time deficit to 38-30.
Smith scored 12 first-half
points for the Bucs. Tiggs
added eight, while Sollazzo had 10 assists in the first 20
minutes.
Gwynne tallied 11 of
Campbell's 30 first-half points on 4-of-5 shooting, while Merthie
added eight.
Monday's victory was
Campbell's first-ever against ETSU after 10 losses to open the
series. The Bucs won the
first seven games against CU since joining the A-Sun in 2005-06,
including a 79-60 victory last month at Johnson City.
Campbell moved ahead of Stetson
(13-15, 9-10) into sixth place in the A-Sun standings after the
Hatters lost 81-66 at Jacksonville Monday.
The Camels host the Hatters
in their final home game of the season on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The
contest will be televised throughout the Southeast on CSS and on
WTVD digital in the Triangle area.
