GREENVILLE, N.C. Behind the hot bats of Zach Johnson
(Smithfield, N.C.) and Ellis Lowe (San Diego, Calif.), Campbell
(17-15) defeated #17 East Carolina (26-10) by a score of 12-7. Johnson, who finished the day
just a triple shy of the cycle, batted 3-for-4 with four RBI and a
run scored. Meanwhile, Lowe
hit his third home run of his career and third in the last three
games; the sophomore finished the night with four hits, while
driving in four runs and scoring two.
Campbell would
score early and often, while surviving a late ECU rally en route to
the 12-7 victory. The
Camels would get the scoring started in the top of the first
inning. With two outs and
Carlton Floyd (Riegelwood, N.C.) standing on second with Ellis Lowe
on first, Zach Johnson singled to left field. Johnson's RBI single that scored Floyd
gave the Camels an early 1-0 lead.
East Carolina
would answer right back in the home half of the first. With one out in the inning, Stephen
Batts doubled to left center allowing Ryan Wood to tie the game at
1-1. With two outs and
Batts still on second, Brandon Henderson would single through the
right side to bring Batts in to score. Batts' run gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead
after one complete inning.
Campbell would
answer ECU's rally with one of their own as they exploded for five
runs in the second inning.
With Bryan Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and Graham Fronk
(Charlotte, N.C.) in scoring position, D.J. Johnson (Winston-Salem,
N.C.) would lay down a sacrifice bunt. Johnson's sacrifice would bring
Braswell home from third and allow Fronk to advance to third.
After Chris Bangi
(Jacksonville, Fla.) was hit by a pitch, Carlton Floyd would walk;
the fourth ball was an errant pitch by ECU hurler Mike Anderson
that allowed Fronk to score and Bangi to advance to third. With Campbell leading 3-2, Ellis
Lowe would homer to left field, bringing in Bangi and Floyd. The home run by Lowe gave the
sophomore his 36th, 37th and 38th
RBI of the season.
The Pirates would
cut into the Camels lead with two runs in the second inning. Dustin Harrington homered to
left field to cut the deficit to three runs. Trent Whitehead would later score on a
wild pitch to cut the Camels lead to just two runs.
Dan Gardo (West
Chester, Pa.) got the call on the hill for the Camels against the
Pirates. The sophomore
pitched just 1.2 innings allowing four runs on seven hits while
fanning three. Logan Davis
(Ft. Cobb, Okla.) would come in to relieve Gardo. Davis would pitch two complete innings
allowing zero runs and giving up zero hits.
Campbell would
push across four runs in the top of the fourth inning. With Ellis Lowe at third and Brian
Gana (Richland, Wash.) standing at first and zero outs, Zach
Johnson would step to the plate. The junior would knock in his
10th home run of the season as well as his
40th, 41st and 42nd RBI. Johnson's three run home run
extended the Camels lead to 9-4. Campbell would extend the lead to 10-4
when Graham Fronk doubled to left field bringing Alex Aycoth
(Sanford, Fla.) in to score.
Jonathon Lopez
(Vineland, N.J.) would be the third pitcher used of the night for
Campbell. Lopez would pitch
2.2 innings for the Camels giving up three runs on six hits. The junior southpaw struck out
two ECU batters. Lopez was credited with the win and improves to
2-3 on the season.
Hunter Ford
(Wilmington, N.C.) would follow Lopez on the bump. Ford pitched two-thirds of an inning,
allowing one run on three hits, while striking out one batter.
The game was
called in the eighth inning right after Parker Fleming (Lexington,
S.C.) had entered the game. The
rain that entered the area causing a 35 minute delay never let up
causing the game to be called.
Campbell was also
led at the plate by Chris Bangi, Carlton Floyd, and Graham
Fronk. Bangi finished the
game 2-of-3 with three runs scored. Floyd finished the game with two hits,
two runs scored and an RBI.
Lastly, Fronk finished with two hits, a RBI and a run scored.
Campbell
will
return to action on Wednesday night when they host the Charleston
Southern Buccaneers. First
pitch at Taylor Field is slated for 6:30 p.m.
