BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Lorne Merthie scored 23 points and Campbell
defeated Johnson C. Smith 77-64 Monday night at Gore Arena.
Merthie hit 7-of-13 threes and dealt 8 assists for the Camels
(4-3), who won their second straight game and for the fourth time
in five outings. Freshman Marvelle Harris came off the bench to
hit season highs with 16 points (8-of-8 shooting), 8 rebounds and 4
blocked shots, while Junard Hartley added 12 points as 12
assists.
Ronald Thornhill led Johnson C. Smith (2-3) with 18 points on
6-of-17 shooting. James Otey added 14 points, hitting 4-of-6
threes.
Leading by seven at the break, Campbell scored the first seven
points of the second half and the Golden Bulls were unable to pull
within single digits the rest of the way. Andrew Ryan's 3 gave the
Camels their largest lead (65-47) with 10:44 remaining.
Campbell shot 53 percent (32-60) from the field and held a 40-16
advantage on points in the paint. Johnson C. Smith made only 36
percent of its shots, but hit 11-of-28 threes (.393) and canned all
nine of its free throws.
Preston Dodson matched his career high with 11 rebounds, while
adding 8 points for the Camels, who played without injured forward
Eric Griffin for the second-straight game and guard Amir Celestin,
who sat out with a bruised wrist he suffered late in Saturday's
93-77 win over Longwood.
Campbell led by 16 with 1:53 left in the opening half after
Hartley's 3-point play capped an 11-2 run that pushed the margin to
40-24. However, the Golden Bulls closed the period on a 9-0 burst
on threes from Thornhill and James Otey, plus a 3-point play by
Earl Jackson that left Campbell holding a 40-33 edge at the
break.
After a 10-day break for final exams, Campbell returns to action on
Fri., Dec. 10 when the Camels host Western Carolina in a 7:00 p.m.
tip-off.
