SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Junard Hartley scored 15 points and hit
4-of-4 free throws in the final 27.5 second to lead Campbell to a
67-60 win over USC Upstate Thursday night at the Hodge Center.
In
the Camels' Atlantic Sun Conference opener, the Camels built a
19-point lead with 10:00 remaining; then held off a Spartan rally
to extend their winning streak to four games.
Hartley
led Campbell (6-3, 1-0) with a season-high 15 points, plus 6
assists. Keishawn Mayes came off the bench and matched his
season-high with 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting, plus 7 rebounds.
Marvelle Harris added 9 points and 12 boards for his
second-straight double-figure night on the glass.
Torrey
Craig led Upstate (2-8, 1-1) with 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting
from the floor, 3-of-7 from long range and 4-of-5 from the stripe,
plus 6 rebounds. Josh Chavis added 11 points, 9 in the first half,
but missed his last seven 3-point attempts.
The
Camels extended a 15-point half-time lead to 19 (51-32) on Mayes'
post move with 12:27 left. However, Upstate answered with a 20-7
run and pulled within 58-52 on Mezie Uzochukwu's free throw with
3:33 remaining.
Craig's
3 from the left wing cut the gap to 61-56 with 2:27 to go, but
Celestin broke the press and drove to the basket to make it 63-56
with 2:20 left. The Spartans got as close as 63-60 on Babatunde
Olumuyiwa's foul shots with 1:25 to play, but Craig missed a 3 from
the right side with 32 seconds remaining and Merthie was fouled on
the rebound.
Merthie
missed both free throws, but the Spartans knocked the ball out of
bounds and the Camels retained possession. Hartley then canned a
pair of shots to push the gap to 65-60 with 27.5 left. Chavis
turned the ball over with 21.7 to go and Hartley again converted
from the line for what proved to be the final margin.
The
Camels held Upstate to 36 percent shooting from the field (19-53)
and held a 46-27 advantage on the boards. Campbell shot 50 percent
(27-54) from the floor and finished with a 38-18 advantage on
points in the paint.
Campbell
reeled off a 19-3 run midway through the first half and led 38-23
at intermission thanks to a 22-2 edge on points in the paint. The
Camel bench also outscored the Upstate reserves 20-4 in the first
20 minutes.
Hartley's
3 broke a 12-all tie with 10:32 remaining to start the Camel burst
and Harris' short jumper in the lane pushed the edge to 31-15 with
2:53 left.
Campbell,
meanwhile, held Upstate to just 27 percent (7-26) shooting from the
field, 18 percent (2-11) from inside the arc. The Spartans stayed
in contact with 5-of-15 shooting from 3-point range, including
3-of-3 by Chavis, who had 9 points before the break.
CU
improved to 4-1 when holding foes to less than 70 points and moved
to 5-0 when leading at half-time. CU won its fourth-straight in
the series and upped the edge to 5-2 in the series against its
nearest A-Sun rival.
Campbell returns to action Wednesday when the Camels host UNC
Wilmington in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Gore Arena.
