BUIES
CREEK, N.C. - Junard Hartley hit a 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds
remaining to lift Campbell to a 57-56 win over UNC Wilmington
Wednesday night at Gore Arena.
The
Camels (7-3) trailed by as many as 14 and by 10 at half-time before
holding the Seahawks to 33 percent shooting after the break.
Campbell
extended its win streak to five games and won its seventh in the
last eighth outings. UNCW (5-6) dropped a second-straight
heartbreaker, following Monday's 62-60 overtime loss to Illinois
State.
Trailing
55-54 with 10.4 seconds to go, Hartley had a chance to give the
Camels the lead, but missed on a short drive in traffic and UNCW
gained possession when the rebound went off CU and out of
bounds.
Hartley
then fouled Chad Tomko on the inbound pass with 9.4 seconds
remaining, but the 83 percent free throw shooter missed the second
of two shots to leave the margin at two. Lorne Merthie dribbled
down the floor and found Hartley open in the left corner and the
senior hit nothing but net for his sixth three in 10 games this
year.
Merthie
finished with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting despite facing a
zone-chaser defense much of the night. Marvelle Harris had 11
points and 7 rebounds for Campbell, which held its fourth-straight
opponent below 50 percent shooting.
Hartley
added with 9 points, 6 assists, 3 steals and just one turnover in
36 minutes. The deciding basket was his 2nd career three to win a
game, following a trey from the same spot to lift the Camels to a
69-68 win on Jan. 8, 2009 at Lipscomb.
Keishawn
Mayes (7 rebounds) and Eric Griffin (7 rebounds, 4 steals) chipped
in 8 points apiece for the Camels, who shot 44 percent (24-54) from
the field, but just 5-of-13 from the line. Amir Celestin had 5
assists and no turnovers in 33 minutes.
Trevor
Deloach led UNCW with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, plus 9 rebounds
in 19 minutes. Tomko, Ahmad Grant and Matt Wilson finished with 8
each for the Seahawks, who shot 43 percent from the floor and
connected on 13-of-22 (.591) from the stripe.
UNCW
extended a 13-2 run midway through the first half to a 21-6 rally
and led 31-17 with 1:28 to go after Deloach canned a three.
However, the Camels cut the gap to 31-21 at the break on layups
from Harris and Merthie.
CU
wrapped a 14-2 burst around half-time and narrowed the margin to
33-31 on Celestin's foul shot with 16:43 to go. Donte Morales'
foul shots pushed the UNCW edge to 42-34 with 11:30 remaining, but
CU answered with an 11-3 flurry capped by Mayes' three at the key
and a lay-in with 9:21 to go that tied the game at 45.
UNCW
only made two field goals over the last 10:00 - threes from Tanner
Milson at the 4:37 mark and Grant with 1:46 to play.
The
Seahawks finished with a 36-31 edge on the glass, but Campbell
outscored the visitors by a 28-14 margin in the paint.
Campbell improved to 5-1 on the year when holding foes to less than
70.
Merthie entered the game ranked 5th in the country in 3-point field
goal percentage (.520), but made just 2-of-7 from long distance.
He did, however, have 3 of Campbell's 12 steals on the night.
First-year UNCW head coach Buzz Peterson faced the Camels for the
4th time, all with different schools. He coached Tennessee to a
90-49 win over CU on Dec. 23, 2004 at Knoxville. His Coastal
Carolina team fell to the Camels at Carter Gym 83-63 on Nov. 16,
2006. On Dec. 30, 2009, Campbell defeated the Peterson-led
Appalachian State Mountaineers 92-63 at Gore Arena.
Robbie Laing-coached Camel teams are now 2-3 all-time against
UNCW. Campbell improved to 26-7 all-time in the Pope Convocation
Center / Gore Arena.
Following a short break for Christmas, the Camels return to
Atlantic Sun Conference action on Dec. 30 in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at
East Tennessee State.
