JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - Justin Tubbs scored 21 points and Adam
Sollazzo added a career-high 17 Thursday night to lead East
Tennessee State to a 72-59 win over Campbell at MSHA Athletics
Center.
Campbell (7-4, 1-1 A-Sun) shot just 39 percent for the game and
committed 17 turnovers, which the Bucs converted into 24 points.
Isiah Brown (13) and Mike Smith (10) also hit double figures for
ETSU (6-7, 1-1), which shot 46 percent for the game and made more
free throws (18-of-27) than the Camels (7-of-14) attempted.
Eric Griffin game off the bench to score 19 points and hit
season-highs for rebounds (13) and blocked shots (5) for the
Camels, who saw their five-game win streak halted. Junard Hartley
added 15 points and Lorne Merthie 11.
ETSU wrapped a 13-2 run around halftime and built a double-digit
lead on Tubbs' 3 from the right corner with 19:06 left in the
game. Campbell made just 3 of its first 16 shots in the second
half, while ETSU hit 9-of-16 in the same span and the Bucs led by
as many as 17 (58-41) on Sollazzo's jumper with 8:28 left.
Sollazzo hit 7-of-9 from the floor and added 5 assists for ETSU;
Brown grabbed a team-leading 8 rebounds. Tubbs canned 5-of-9
threes and added 7 boards.
The Camels finished with a 38-35 edge on the glass and turned 16
offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.
Smith's 3 from the top of the key with one second left gave the
Bucs a 37-30 lead at the break.
Tubbs scored 13 first-half points, including 3-of-6 from long
range, to hit double figures for just the third time in 13 outings
this season. Smith added 7 before the break for the Bucs, who made
9-of-13 free throws.
Griffin scored 8 first-half points and Martell Jackson added 6 for
the Camels, who made just 2-of-7 from the stripe before
intermission. Merthie made his first two 3-pointers, but picked up
his third foul with 4:24 to go.
CU starters Keishawn Mayes, Amir Celestin and Marvelle Harris were
limited to a combined 21 minutes after each was whistled for two
fouls in the opening period.
Campbell scored the first 6 points of the game before ETSU answered
with a 19-5 spurt and led 19-11 after Tubbs' free throws with 11:20
left in the half.
The Camels then countered with a 15-5 burst and grabbed a 26-24
advantage on Griffin's 3 from the left wing with 3:27 to go.
Campbell begins a four-game home stand on Monday against
Jacksonville in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Gore Arena.
