BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell celebrated Senior Night at Gore Arena
in style on Friday with a 79-57 victory over East Tennessee State
that sent the Camels back into sole possession of first place in
the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Campbell (18-9, 13-5) jumped to a 13-3 lead and held a double-digit
advantage for the final 32:50 of play while extending its winning
streak to a season-best six games in the last home appearance for
Jonathan Rodriguez, Kyle Vejraska, William Kossangue and Miles
Taylor. The advantage reached 33 points (76-43) with 4:05
remaining before head coach Robbie Laing emptied his bench.
Sophomore Lorne Merthie hit 5 three pointers and scored a game-high
19 points. Taylor added 13 points on 6-of-6 shooting, while Junard
Hartley scored 10, dealt 5 assists and made a career-best 7 steals
during the CSS-TV/A-Sun Game of the Week.
"I really don't have any explanation for nights like these," said
head coach Robbie Laing. "But you don't have this kind of success
unless your guys are connected and playing for each other. We got
after it with our full court pressure, and we're running our
offense better than any time this year, better than any time in my
7 years here."
Rodriguez, who entered the game ranked 4th in the league in scoring
(17.9), finished with 9 points, but dealt 4 assists and grabbed 6
rebounds. Kossangue added 9 points and 2 assists in 19
minutes.
Micah Williams led ETSU (14-14, 10-7) with 14 points and Sheldon
Cooley had 11. The Bucs made just 39 percent of their shots
(22-56) and committed 22 turnovers, which the Camels converted into
29 points.
Campbell's 6-game win streak is the program's longest since a
7-game stretch late in 1995-96. The last 4 victories have come
during an 8-day span.
ETSU's Justin Tubbs opened the game with a 3-pointer, but five
different Camels scored during the 13-0 burst that followed.
Campbell shot 52 percent (13-25) from the floor in the opening half
and held a 35-19 lead at intermission, thanks in part to 15 points
scored off 13 ETSU miscues.
Campbell finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field
(27-54) and hit 10-of-21 (.476) from 3-point range, plus 15-of-22
from the line to offset a 40-29 rebounding advantage for the
visitors. ETSU made just 4-of-18 from long range and 9-of-15 from
the stripe (.600).
Following the game, the four seniors and senior manager Seth Womble
addressed the crowd of 3023, the second-largest gathering ever at
3095-seat Gore Arena.
The 2010 senior class has helped the program compile its best
four-year record in league play (36-36) since joining the A-Sun in
1994-95. CU's 56 overall victories over the last 4 seasons is the
program's most in a similar span in 14 years.
CU also broke the school record for regular season conference wins
(12), set in 1993-94 while Campbell was a member of the Big
South.
Campbell entered the game 1-10 all-time vs. ETSU, but has won the
last two games at Gore Arena.
The Camels close the regular season next week at Jacksonville
Thursday (Feb. 25) and North Florida Saturday (Feb. 27).
