Men's Basketball falls 65-52 at Jacksonville; six-game win streak ends

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Jacksonville used a 22-4 run midway through the second half and went on to defeat Campbell 65-52 Thursday night and take sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference race.

The Dolphins (18-10, 14-5) clinched at least a share of the A-Sun race heading into Saturday afternoon's game against East Tennessee State. Campbell (18-10, 13-6) saw its 6-game win streak come to a halt as JU scored 24 points off 21 Camel turnovers.

Ben Smith and Travis Cohn led Jacksonville with 15 points each. Ayron Hardy and Lehmon Colbert scored 10 apiece for the Dolphins, who won their fifth in a row and 15th in the last 20 games.

Jonathan Rodriguez led the Camels with 16 points; Miles Taylor had 14 on 6-of-7 from the field and Lorne Merthie 12, all in the first half.

Campbell can still finish tied for the A-Sun regular season title, but needs help from ETSU. The Camels play Saturday at North Florida (7:30 p.m.).

Nine Campbell turnovers fueled the decisive 22-4 burst. The Camels hit just 8-of-20 from the field (.400) in the final stanza and did not attempt a 3-point shot.

Jacksonville finished the game shooting 45.7 percent from the floor (21-46) and made 6-of-14 (429) from 3-point range. The Dolphins made more free throws (17-25) than Campbell attempted (12-15).

Campbell made 7 of its first 8 shots and took a 22-14 lead with 11:31 remaining after Miles Taylor converted a 3-point play.

The Camels led 28-17 when Rodriguez hit a jumper from the right baseline with 5:53 to go. However, the Dolphins closed the period on a 10-2 run, punctuated by Ayron Hardy's put-back dunk at the horn to pull within 30-27 at the break.

Merthie knocked down 2-of-3 triples and led all scorers at the break with 12 points, while Taylor added 8 points. Campbell shot 57.9 percent (11-19) from the floor and made 6-of-7 from the line in the first period.

Cohn led Jacksonville with 9 first-half points, hitting all 3 of his treys, while Smith chipped in 7. Jacksonville connected on 8-of-17 shots from the field (.471) and 7-of-12 (.583) from the stripe.

The Camels defeated JU 73-57 on Dec. 19 at Buies Creek, but the Dolphins improved to 9-3 all-time against the Camels in Jacksonville and moved back in front (12-11) in the all-time series.
