Men's Hoops defeats UNF 57-49 to claim share of A-Sun regular season title

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Miles Taylor and Jonathan Rodriguez combined for 25 points in the second half and Campbell defeated North Florida 57-49 to earn a share of the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title Saturday night at UNF Arena.

The Camels opened the second period on an 18-3 run, holding the Ospreys scoreless for a 9:44 stretch during the span. UNF cut the gap to six late in the contest, but could not overcome 10 second-half turnovers that led to 13 Camel points.

Campbell (19-10, 14-6) ended the regular season with 7 wins in its final 8 games. UNF (13-17, 8-12) lost for the 3rd time in the last 4 games, and will be seeded 7th in next week's tourney.

Taylor finished with a game-high 15 points, 13 in the final stanza, plus 9 rebounds. Rodriguez added 12 points, 7 boards and 4 assists, while Junard Hartley had 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and a career-high tying 7 steals.

Campbell finished the regular season with a 14-6 A-Sun record, tied with Lipscomb, Jacksonville and likely Belmont (which led Kennesaw State by 29 at the half) for the A-Sun lead. Due to tie-breaking procedures, the Camels will be seeded 4th in next week's league tournament at Macon, Ga., and face 5th-seeded East Tennessee State on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

The regular-season crown is the first in Campbell's Division I era since the Camels joined the Big South Conference ('85-86); then moved to the Atlantic Sun in '94-95.

Jerron Granberry led UNF (13-17, 8-12) with 14 points, while Matt Sauey had 13 and 3 blocks. Andy Diaz grabbed 10 rebounds, 7 on the offensive end, but finished 0-of-6 from the line.

Trailing 23-22 at the half, the Camels held UNF to just 1-of-9 shooting in the Ospreys' first 10 attempts of the final period to start the decisive burst. Rodriguez gave the Camels the lead for good (28-26) with 17:25 to go, then capped the 14-0 rally with a lay-up at the 8:28 mark for a 40-26 Camel advantage. The senior scored 8 of his 12 points during the span.

UNF hit just 9-of-20 free throws (.450) on the night and shot only 35.3 percent (18-51) from the floor. Campbell forced 17 UNF turnovers, which the Camels turned into 20 points. Campbell held a 46-38 advantage on the glass and allowed just 5 second-chance points.

"We missed some chippies, some open looks, but I think we won it on the defensive end and on the glass, which is the way it should be when you win a championship," said seventh-year head coach Robbie Laing. "It wasn't easy; nobody ever said it would be to win a regular season championship. I'm just thankful that we had a University, community and fans that were patient while we built a championship formula - great kids who are pretty good basketball players."

Campbell used a 12-2 run to take an early 7-point lead (12-5), but UNF clawed back to take a 23-22 edge at half-time. Hartley led the Camels with 8 first-half points and 3 steals, but CU shot only 30.8 percent (8-26) from the floor in the opening period.

Rodriguez, who entered the game ranked 4th in the league in scoring at 17.5 points per game, was held scoreless in the opening half. The senior picked up his second personal foul with 14:12 remaining in the period and played just nine minutes prior to the break.

"The player of the game had to be Hartley because he played 2 complete halves," said Laing. "He was big for us when we had to play without Rodriguez for so long due to foul trouble. Junard just kept everything together."

The Camels finished the regular season with the program's 2nd-most wins, behind only the 1993-94 club that assembled a 20-9 record. CU's 14 A-Sun victories are the team's most-ever during regular-season conference play.

Campbell finished the night shooting just 35 percent from the field, but made only 12 turnovers. Hartley entered the game 18 in the nation (tops in the A-Sun) in steals per game; then matched the career-high 7 he made in last week's 79-57 victory over ETSU at Buies Creek.
