BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell outscored Maryland Eastern Shore 20-3
to pick up two key victories, 14-2 and 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon at
Taylor Field.
Game one was the
complete package for the Fighting Camels as Campbell posted strong
offensive and pitching performances. The offense was led by Chris
Bangi who was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle as
well as Zach Johnson who posted a
3-for-4 mark with three RBI.
The Campbell offense
was strong early as the Camels scored one in the first inning, two
in the second inning, three in the third and five in the fourth to
lead 11-0 after four innings. UMES scored one in the fifth and one
in the seventh to cut the deficit to eight before Campbell scored
one in the seventh and two in the eighth to make the final
margin.
In the pitching realm
it was a strong performance from junior Ben
Brown who went five innings for the Camels while only allowing
three hits and one earned run. With the win, Brown picks up his
second consecutive win and moves to 2-2 on the season.
For UMES it was Nick
Wiggins who led at the plate while going 2-for-5 on the afternoon.
Phil Vaughn and J.J. Correveau registered the two RBI for the
Hawks.
Donnie Haines was
credited with the loss for the Hawks as the righty pitched just two
innings and allowed five earned runs off of seven Fighting Camel
hits. Haines moves to 0-3 with the decision.
In game two it was a
sluggish start for both teams as neither team scored until the
third inning where UMES notched their first, and only, lead of the
doubleheader. The Hawks were able to load the bases with three
straight singles off of Campbell starter Logan
Self. J.J. Correveau grounded into a 6-3 double play but Luis
Mena crossed the plate for the only run for UMES in game two.
Campbell didn't allow
UMES to lead for long as the Camels scored two runs in the bottom
half of the third. Alan
Denman registered an RBI as he sent a single through the left
side to bring the score even and while Denman recorded an out later
as he was caught stealing he stayed in a rundown long enough for Chris
Bangi to steal home for the go ahead score.
Campbell followed
that inning with a four run fourth that was led by a Cameron Nelson round
tripper that was sent to deep right center field. Ellis
Lowe kept the offense going as the junior sent an offering
right up the middle that brought Bangi around to score. Zach
Johnson was the final scoring threat of game two as he sent a
triple into right center field that scored Alan Denman and
Lowe.
Logan Self pitched a
gem for the Fighting Camels as the freshman pitched six innings
allowing just one earned run off of five hits. If the third inning
was taken out of the equation, Self faced just one batter over the
minimum. With the win Self picks up his first win in a Campbell
uniform and now sits at 1-0 on the season.
UMES received a good
pitching performance from Karim Gonzalez as the righty went five
innings, allowed six earned runs off of eight hits. Gonzalez moves
to 0-4 with the loss.
Campbell will
conclude their three game midweek set with Maryland Eastern Shore
on Wednesday afternoon starting at 4:00 p.m. at Taylor Field.
