ETSU knocks off Campbell 72-64 in A-Sun quarterfinal round

MACON, GA. - Micah Williams scored a career-high 32 points - 23 in the second half - and East Tennessee State rallied for a 72-64 win over Campbell Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament at the University Center.

The 5th-seeded Bucs (18-14) scored 51 second-half points, hit 55 percent from the field after intermission and extended their winning streak to four games since a 79-57 loss Feb. 19 at Campbell.

ETSU will face 8th-seeded Kennesaw State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the semifinal round. Second-seeded Jacksonville will meet the winner of Thursday's nightcap between 3rd seed Belmont and 6th seed Mercer in the other semifinal.

Williams made 9-of-14 shots, 4-of-6 threes, and all 10 of his free throws to eclipse his previous career high by 10 points. Tommy Hubbard added 18 points (10-of-12 from the line) and 8 rebounds, plus 3 steals.

Jonathan Rodriguez led fourth-seeded Campbell (19-11) with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting to close his career with 2153 points, the third-highest total in A-Sun history. The 4-time all-conference selection also finished with 1066 career boards, second-most since the league was formed in 1978. He is one of 101 players in NCAA Division I history to score at least 2000 points with at least 1000 rebounds in his career.

Senior Miles Taylor added 14 points (4-of-8 field goals, 6-of-6 from the line), while Junard Hartley scored 10 points and dealt 7 assists. Campbell's 2nd-leading scorer, Lorne Merthie finished with 8 points and five steals, but hit only 2-of-11 from 3-point range. The sophomore guard closed the regular season as the league's most accurate 3-point shooter in conference games (.452).

ETSU moved in front for the first time all day in the midst of a 15-4 run that put the Bucs ahead 39-33. CU cut the margin to 46-45 on Miles Taylor's bucket with 7:30 left, but ETSU countered with a 12-2 push as Williams had 10 points in the burst, and pushed the gap to 58-47 with 5:01 left. Campbell (19-11) cut the gap to seven on two occasions, but drew no closer.

"Unfortunately, in tournament play it comes down to one game," said Robbie Laing, who was named the A-Sun Coach of the Year on Tuesday. "We had look after look and just clunked 'em. We didn't turn ETSU over enough to compensate for the rebounding deficiency and missed shots."

Williams scored 20 points after ETSU 6-foot-8 post Isiah Brown picked up his 4th personal foul with 14:21 remaining and the game tied at 31.

"Early in the game, we didn't rotate to (Williams) on defense, and he just rose up and shot it in the hole. Then, later on he just beat us one-on-one," said Laing.

Campbell limited ETSU to 35 percent shooting in the opening half and forced 9 turnovers, which the Camels converted into 11 points. The Camels made 5 of its first 7 shots and led 18-9 when William Kossangue drained a 3-pointer from the left wing with 7:25 to play. ETSU responded with an 8-0 run to pull within 18-17 on Isiah Brown's free throw with 4:56 remaining, but CU held the Bucs to just one field goal in the last 5:00 of the period and led 25-21 at half-time.

On the day, Campbell shot 44 percent from the floor, but made only 4-of-18 threes (.222), while knocking down 14-of-17 (.824) from the foul line. ETSU finished the contest 19-of-42 from the field (.452), 5-of-15 from 3-point distance, and made 29-of-37 (.784) from the free throw line while holding a 35-23 edge on the glass.

"We've come an awful long way. The situation was dismal a few years ago," said Laing, who completed his seventh season in charge of the Camels. "But we've put together a competitive product, packed our house, went on the road and won consistently and won a regular season championship. We have a lot to build on. I love this game, and it just makes me sick we don't get to play tomorrow."

Campbell, the A-Sun leader in steals per game (10.6) and turnover margin (plus 4.1), forced 18 ETSU turnovers and made 8 steals, while committing only 13 miscues.

The Camels, who shared the A-Sun regular season championship, set a school Division I era (since 1977-78) record for regular season conference (14) and overall (19) wins with 14.

Rodriguez became the first player in Campbell history to score 500 points in 3 different seasons. He concluded his senior year with 522 points in 30 games.

The fourth seeded-team owns a 14-14 record all-time against fifth seeds in the A-Sun Championship.
