BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Kevin Nelson and Josh
Holskey both went yard for the Fighting Camels as they defeated
Savannah State 16-1 in non-conference baseball action from Taylor
Field on Friday afternoon. Campbell scored 16 runs off of 17 hits
which was their highest total, in both runs and hits, for the
Fighting Camels in the young 2010 season.
Campbell (5-3) also received a great pitching performance from
sophomore Frank
Zier who went five innings, allowing just five hits, and no
earned runs to pick up his second win of the year (2-1).
It was the collective
bats of Ellis Lowe, Chris
Bangi, Logan
Self, and DJ Johnson that led the
attack as each one of the hitters collected multiple hits on the
afternoon. Lowe went 4-for-6 on the evening while collecting three
RBI, Bangi went 2-for-4 scoring three runs and knocking in a
runner. Self, a freshman, went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Johnson
went 2-for-4 on the afternoon scoring two runs.
The Camels started
the game off on the right foot offensively as Ellis
Lowe sent a triple to right field that scored Chris
Bangi in the first inning. Campbell continued scoring in the
second as Lowe sent a single up the middle that scored DJ
Johnson from third.
It was in the third
inning that the offensive explosion occurred for the Fighting
Camels as Campbell batted around the order, scoring six runs off of
five hits. Alex Aycoth sent a triple
into right center field to start the inning and that was followed
by a Logan
Self single to center field that scored Aycoth. Bangi sent a
RBI double to center field that brought around Bryan
Braswell to score. After a Bangi stole third it set up a Lowe
single up the middle that scored the junior from Jacksonville.
That single brought a change on the mound for the Tigers as starter
Joseph Jackson leaving the contest for Jason Wynn. The scoring
wasn't finished though for the inning as Campbell scored two
additional runs off of an error by left fielder Jonathan Ross.
Campbell came back in
the fourth and added three additional runs to their total as Kevin
Nelson hit his first home run of the season to deep left center
field.
In the fifth inning
Savannah State scored their lone run. The inning started off with
Dychal Bowles reaching on an error by DJ Johnson and he later came
around to score off of a Julius Green single to right field.
The Fighting Camels
piled on the runs as they scored three in the seventh and two in
the eighth. In the seventh it was the RBI singles of Blake Boyce and Logan
Self as well as a fielder's choice off the bat of Chaz
Sessoms that brought home the three runs for Campbell in the
inning. In the eighth it was another towering home run, this time
by Josh Holskey, that brought
home the two runs.
Savannah State drops
to 1-8 on the loss with the pitching decision going to Joseph
Jackson who went 2.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight
hits for the Tigers.
Campbell will be back
in action against Savannah State on Saturday in a doubleheader
starting at 1:00 p.m. from Taylor Field.
