GREENVILLE,
N.C. - Campbell was able to close the deficit to within a run twice
but fell short in a hard-fought battle with East Carolina, 6-3, at
Clark-LeClair Stadium on Tuesday night.
Playing before a home crowd of 3,072, East Carolina (21-12) struck
early as the Pirates scored two runs in the bottom of the first off
of a Zach Wright two RBI shot to right field off of Campbell
starter Jeff Rydman.
Campbell (17-17) mounted a threat in the top half of the second as
Zach Johnson reached on a throwing error by ECU third baseman John
Wooten. Josh Holskey moved Johnson to second as he slapped a
single to right center. With one out the Fighting Camels had
runners in deep scoring position as DJ Johnson sacrifice bunted the
runners to second and third. ECU starter Brad Mincey shut down the
scoring threat as the righty struck out both Blake Boyce and Kevin
Nelson to end the inning.
In the top half of the third inning Campbell was able to scratch a
run across as Chris Bangi advanced home when Corey Thompson dropped
the baseball on the exchange while trying to turn a double
play.
ECU answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the
third as Kyle Roller scampered home following an errant pick off
throw to third from Ben Brown. ECU tacked on another run in the
fourth with a RBI single from Corey Thompson scored Phillip Clark
from third.
Campbell drew to within one as they scored two in the sixth off of
a Kevin Nelson two RBI double that brought around Josh Holskey and
DJ Johnson.
ECU drew that lead back out to three as the Pirates scored two off
of a two RBI single through the right side from the bat of Corey
Thompson.
Designated Hitter Josh Holskey led the effort for the Fighting
Camels as the sophomore went 3-for-4 on the evening while
registering a double and two singles.
For ECU it was the bat of Corey Thompson and Kyle Roller that
pushed the Pirate offense. Thompson ended up going 2-for-4 with
three RBI and Roller posted a similar 2-for-4 night while knocking
two doubles.
Jeff Rydman was dealt the loss as the senior went two innings,
while giving up two earned runs off of four hits. Rydman falls to
2-1 on the campaign.
For ECU the win gets credited to Brad Mincey as the junior went 5.2
innings while giving up three runs, two that were earned, off of
nine hits. Mincey moved to 2-1 on the season.
With the loss Campbell has now dropped its last eight contests but
will look to win its first conference game in its last seven tries
as it travels to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on the USC Upstate
Spartans this weekend. The series will start with a game on Friday
night starting at 6:00 p.m. and will continue with a doubleheader
on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
