BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell had a lead in the eighth inning of
game one and was tied with ETSU in the same inning of game two of
the doubleheader but fell to the Bucs in both by scores of 4-3 and
6-4 at Taylor Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the sweep
Campbell falls to 20-21 on the season with a 6-15 mark in Atlantic
Sun action. ETSU improves to 22-17 and 11-7 in conference
play.
Campbell raced out to
a 2-0 lead at the end of two innings following an RBI single from
Ellis Lowe in the first and a RBI groundout in the second by
Cameron Nelson.
ETSU answered with a
run in the top of the third off of a solo shot to right field from
Paul Hoilman.
Zach Johnson gave
Campbell a 3-1 advantage at the end of three frames as the senior
slapped an single up the middle to score Alex Aycoth.
From that point it
was ETSU starter Bo Reeder who dominated the Camels. Reeder only
faced three batters over the minimum in the final six frames as he
gave up two hits and a walk over that time.
ETSU pushed closer in
the sixth as Kerry Doane slammed a first pitch offering from Jeff
Rydman to deep left field to bring the score to 3-2.
Rydman ran into more
trouble in the eighth as the senior gave up a lead off single to
Andrew Green which ended the outing for the lefty. Parker Fleming
entered the game and faced one batter, Hoilman, whom he walked on
four straight pitches. The third Campbell pitcher of the
inning entered the game, in Daniel Gardo, who gave up a RBI to
Doane on a fielder's choice and allowed the go-ahead run after a
single from Chas Byrne scored Hoilman.
Campbell went down in
order in the bottom half of the eighth and ninth to seal the
victory for the Bucs.
Jeff Rydman had a
quality start for the Camels as the southpaw went seven plus
innings while giving up three earned runs off of seven hits.
The senior tied his season and career high in strikeouts with eight
during his outing. Parker Fleming was dealt the loss as the
sophomore faced just one batter yet gave up the walk that allowed
the go-ahead run. Fleming falls to 1-1 on the campaign.
Bo Reeder lasted the
entire contest for ETSU on the mound, he allowed three runs (two
earned) off of nine hits and improves to 3-3 on the season.
In the rubber match
of the series Campbell never led, yet tied the contest on three
different occasions. ETSU notched the first score as Campbell
starter Frank Zier walked in Matthew Scruggs to take the early 1-0
advantage.
Campbell answered
with a run in the second following a sacrifice fly to right field
from the bat of Bryan Braswell.
The Bucs took a 2-1
lead in the top of the fifth as Hoilman sent a single through the
left side to score Garrett May.
The Fighting Camels
tied it up again in the bottom half of the frame as Chris Bangi
singled to center field to bring around Cameron Nelson.
The offense stayed
silent until the eighth when both ETSU and Campbell put two on the
board in their respective halves of the inning. ETSU scored the
two in the stanza off of a sacrifice fly to right field by Derek
Niesman and a single to center field from pinch hitter Michael
Gonzalez. For Campbell it took a swing from the bat of Josh
Holskey to knot the game at four as the sophomore sent a first
pitch offering from Ben Booker deep to left field to collect his
third home run of the season.
But ETSU took the
lead for good in the top of the ninth as Doane scored on a wild
pitch from Campbell reliever Logan Self. The Bucs added an
insurance run as Byrne sent a sacrifice fly to left field to score
Reeder from third.
Campbell starter
Frank Zier lasted 7.1 innings while allowing four earned runs off
of seven hits. The sophomore struck out eight yet was not a factor
in the decision. Logan Self was charged with the loss as the
freshman went 1.1 innings, while giving up two earned runs off of
just one hit. Self falls to 1-1 on the season.
Ben Booker was
credited with the win as he went eight innings while giving up four
earned runs off of nine hits; Booker improves to 5-0 on the
season.
Campbell will be back
in action at Taylor Field on Friday night as they face off against
non-conference opponent North Carolina Central. First pitch is
slated for 6:00 p.m. The series will continue with a doubleheader
in Durham on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m. from the Durham
Athletic Park.
