BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Down 13-3 going into the bottom of the ninth
inning, the Camels sent 11 runners to the plate and scored six runs
but it wasn't enough as Florida Gulf Coast defeated Campbell 13-9
on Friday afternoon at Taylor Field.
FGCU (19-10, 10-3
A-Sun) started the game off scoring four runs in the first two
innings off of an Austin Gaines RBI single and a Luke Smierciak
sacrifice fly in the first as well as a Tim Roberson two RBI double
to center field in the second.
Campbell (17-14, 4-9
A-Sun) answered in the bottom half of the inning as Bryan Braswell
sent a three run shot to left field to close the gap to 4-3. The
round tripper marked the first homerun that FGCU starter Chris Sale
had given up during the 2010 season.
Innings three through
eight were all Eagles though as FGCU scored a run in the fourth off
of Stephen Wickens RBI double down the left field line. In the
sixth the Eagles plated three runs off of two home runs. Zach
Maxfield hit the first as he sent a towering shot to right center
field to push the FGCU lead to 5-3. Luke Smierciak followed that
with a two run jack to left center field to close out the Eagle
scoring attack in the sixth.
FGCU piled on the
offense in the eighth as Campbell had problems even getting an out
recorded. Campbell reliever Parker Fleming walked Maxfield to
start off the inning and gave up a double down the left field line
to Austin Gaines. Fleming would leave the contest after the double
and made way for Corey Carver. Carver only faced two batters
and battled with control as he walked Smierciak and gave up a three
RBI triple to Josh Chester. Carver gave the ball to Joe Wagstaff
who gave up an RBI sacrifice fly to Joe Guarnaccia but eventually
got the Camels out of the inning.
The Eagles tacked on
the final run in the top of the ninth as Smierciak registered his
game leading fourth RBI as the junior slapped a single through the
left side which scored Maxfield from third.
Up 13-3 going into
the bottom half of the inning FGCU made the move to the bullpen and
brought in Jason Forjet to face off against the Campbell offense.
Forjet didn't record an out for the Eagles and ended up giving up
four earned runs off of four straight doubles to Kevin Nelson,
Chris Bangi, Ellis Lowe, and Alan Denman. Forjet's outing was
finished after the Denman double and he yielded to Jacob
Barnes.
Barnes was able to
get Zach Johnson to groundout to shortstop for the first out of the
inning but Johnson still recorded the RBI as Lowe scampered home.
Barnes recorded the second out as he struck out Alex Aycoth.
That's when the trouble began for the sophomore as he walked Josh
Holskey, gave up a RBI single down the left field line to DJ
Johnson and walked Blake Boyce to load the bases. Barnes exited
the game and FGCU looked to the third baseman Austin Gaines to
record the final out of the contest. Kevin Nelson greeted Gaines
with a two RBI single to center field. Chris Bangi came up to the
plate next for the Fighting Camels and pushed the count full but
eventually grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.
Alan Denman finished
the contest going 3-for-5 for the Diamond Camels. Ellis Lowe, Alex
Aycoth, DJ Johnson, and Kevin Nelson all registered two hits apiece
in the effort for Campbell.
Chris Sale had
another quality start for the Eagles as the southpaw went eight
complete, gave up three runs off of eight hits, and moved to 5-0 on
the season.
Campbell starter
Frank Zier was dealt the loss as the sophomore went four complete,
gave up five earned runs off of nine hits and fell to 3-5 on the
campaign.
The Fighting Camels
will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they will face off
against Florida Gulf Coast in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
from Taylor Field.
