CREEK, N.C. - Anthony Banks scored 19 points to lead Florida Gulf
Coast to a 68-66 win over Campbell Thursday night at Gore
Arena.
The Eagles (4-13, 1-7) ended a 6-game losing streak by making a
defensive stop on the game's final possession. With 22.2 seconds
to play, FGCU inbounded in its own end, but Christophe Varidel was
tied up by Junard Hartley and Campbell was awarded the ball on
alternating possession.
Hartley penetrated into the lane, but his contested 10-footer
bounced off the rim and Marlon Rivera rebounded with 0.5 seconds to
play.
Campbell (9-9, 3-6) batted back from a 7-point deficit in the final
period, but never led despite drawing even three times.
Lorne Merthie's three pulled CU even at 59-all with 7:02 remaining,
but Chase Fieler put FGCU back in front on a follow shot with 5:32
to go. CU drew within two on three occasions down the stretch, but
no closer.
Varidel added 16 points for FGCU, while Fieler came off the bench
to chip in 14, plus a team-high 7 rebounds. Tim Snyder finished
with 10.
Merthie topped Campbell (9-9, 3-6) with 18 points on 6-of-11
threes, plus five assists. Eric Griffin added 17 points on 7-of-10
shooting, 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Hartley finished with 9
points, 11 assists and 3 steals for the Camels, who made just
7-of-14 from the line.
After shooting 62.5 percent from the floor in the opening half,
Campbell made just 11-of-30 (.367) in the second stanza and
finished at 48 percent for the game. FGCU shot 42 percent from the
floor, but hit 14-of-18 foul shots and converted 15 offensive
rebounds into a 14-7 edge in second-chance points.
Campbell hit 9 of its first 12 shots and led 23-15 when Rico
Ferguson knocked in a 12-footer with 10:40 to play. However, the
Eagles responded with a 17-6 run claimed a 43-38 edge at the
break.
The Camels continue their two-game home stand Saturday with a 3:15
p.m. tip-off against Stetson.
